We wish to honor a remarkable advocate, leader, and friend—Johnnie Puckett.
Johnnie is the longest active member of NAMI Wilmington, and his presence has been a steady force of wisdom, strength, and compassion in our community. As a long-time facilitator and mentor, and the figurehead of our longest-running Peer Support Group, Johnnie has created a space where peers feel safe, seen, and supported. His story—told with honesty and vulnerability—has empowered so many others to share their own.
Johnnie is someone peers naturally turn to for guidance. He listens with empathy, speaks his truth without hesitation, and leads with integrity. He’s not concerned with titles or recognition—he simply shows up, generously sharing the group and creating a calm, welcoming atmosphere where people can just be themselves.
As a former board member and past President, Johnnie played a vital role during NAMI Wilmington’s re-affiliation, always offering clear perspective, leadership, and commitment to the bigger picture.
But Johnnie’s impact goes far beyond our meetings. He remains deeply aware of the challenges facing our community—especially when it comes to affordable housing. He is particularly passionate about advocating for those who are unhoused or recently released from incarceration, recognizing the urgent need for safe, stable places where people can truly rebuild their lives. He reminds us that mental health doesn’t exist in a vacuum—and that healing is hard without housing, dignity, and support.
Johnnie Puckett is a living example of what it means to turn personal trials into purpose. We are endlessly grateful for all that he brings to NAMI Wilmington and to the broader community.
Thank you, Johnnie—for your heart, your voice, and your unwavering commitment to lifting others up.
