Our Story
What is Womynism?
Womynism is the reclamation and celebration of the s*xuality & gender diversity among Black, Indigenous, and of Color womyn and femmes (BIWFOC).
Womynism is a s*xological worldview inspired by Alice Walker's "womanist" and Black feminist theory of understanding the social location of race AND gender as described by Patricia Hill Collins of Black womyn & femmes, identity politics as defined by The Combahee River Collective, the deconstruction of oppression as illustrated by Kimberle Crenshaw's Theory of Intersectionality, and informed by Audre Lorde's emotional insight. The "y" denotes the rejection of socially constructed ideas of gender and the politics of s*xual respectability.
The "y" denotes the rejection of the socially constructed ideology of s*xuality and gender and the politics of s*xual responsibility while embracing and celebrating the right to autonomy the Black, Indigenous, and of color womyn and femmes has over their own body. The “y” is symbolic of the necessity to honor how BIWFOC, transgender or cisgender, q***r or not, s*xual or as*xual, fully show up as their authentic selves. Womynism is s*x-positive, intersectional, in addition to, q***r, disable, trans*, and s*x workers inclusive and affirming worldview.
