Wilson County Health Department is sharing important information about Legionnaires' disease following an increase in cases locally and statewide.

We are working closely with NC DHHS to monitor the situation. The overall risk to the general public remains LOW.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗟𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗲𝘀' 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲?
It's a serious type of pneumonia caused by bacteria found in water systems, such as plumbing, hot tubs, and misting devices. It is NOT spread person-to-person and is NOT caused by drinking water.

𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸?
🔹 Adults 50 and older
🔹 Current or former smokers
🔹 People with chronic lung disease, weakened immune systems, diabetes, or kidney disease

𝗦𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲:
✅ Run faucets and showers for a few minutes if they haven't been used in a few days
✅ Use only distilled water in humidifiers and CPAP machines — and clean them regularly
✅ Keep hot tubs clean and properly maintained
✅ Don't let water sit for long periods in hoses and pipes

🌟 Now Recruiting for the Minority Diabetes Prevention Program!

Enrollment is now open for the Minority Diabetes Prevention Program, a year-long lifestyle change program that helps minority adults with prediabetes reduce their risk for Type 2 diabetes.

Our most recent cohort completed the program in February 2026, and we are now welcoming participants for the next class. During this program, participants work together and receive support through:

✔ Healthy eating tips
✔ Physical activity support
✔ Incentives and healthy snacks
✔ Group encouragement and accountability

Only 12 spots are available for those who qualify.
