BLACK HISTORY NUGGETT: January 15, 1929

The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., one of America's most influential figures in the Civil Rights Movement, was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia. Dr. King was born as Michael King Jr., named after his father. His father later changed both of their names to Martin Luther following a trip to Germany, honoring the legacy of the 16th-Centry Protestant Reformer, Martin Luther.

Dr. King was one of the most iconic civil rights leader who would champion racial equality through nonviolent protest until his assassination in 1968.

BLACK HISTORY FACT: January 14, 1868

African Americans formed a majority at South Carolina's 1868 Constitutional Convention, with about 76 delegates out of 124 bring African American, making it the only Southern state where Black delegates held a majority. This convention marked the first time African American men participated in drafting their state's foundational laws, ushering in an era of Black political influence during Reconstruction. The influence of the African American majority lead to the removal of property requirements for voting, established free public education for all races, and granted women property rights and the right to divorce. It also provided more equitable government by shifting representation to population rather than wealth and population.

Please join the staff at Edwards Funeral Home as we offer our sincerest condolences to the family of Carolyn Jean Lindsey Barnes (82), of Aurora, CO, formerly of Elm City, NC who passed away on Sunday, December 21, 2025, in Aurora. Mrs. Barnes’ funeral will take place on Saturday, January 10, 2026 at 12 noon at Lowry Community Christian Church, 855 Yosemite St., Denver, CO. Burial will follow at Fort Logan National Cemetery, 4400 W Kenyon Ave., Denver, CO 80236.

Mrs. Barnes was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Catherine White Lindsey; her husband, CWO-Ret. Johnnie Clifton Barnes (formerly of Wilson, NC and graduate of Charles H. Darden High School), Wilson, NC; her son, Jerry Wayne Barnes; and her brother, Franklin Maurice Lindsey, Sr.

She is survived by one, son Derryl Keith Barnes (Sharon) of Aurora, CO; two daughters, Kimberly Barnes of Aurora, CO and Katrina Barnes of the home; five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, all of Aurora; four sisters, Bettye Lindsey Tyson (Hubert) of Stantonsburg, NC, Evelyn Lindsey Lucas and Judy Faye Lindsey Taybron (Lester) of Wilson, NC, and Eunice Irene Lindsey of Elm City, NC; one brother, Robert Putney Lindsey (Pamela) of Elm City, NC, one uncle, Fred Douglas White (Thelma) of Durham, NC, several nieces and nephews, and a host of other relative and friends.

Jean began employment at Samson Manufacturing Company, Wilson, NC; Reuben H. Donnelley Corporation, Elm City, NC; and retired from Air Reserve Personnel Center (ARPC) in February of 2014, where she worked in Human Resources in the Surgeon General’s office in Aurora, CO. Jean enjoyed laughing, dancing, making porcelain dolls, and bowling when her husband was alive. In fact, they were a part of a bowling league. She loved music and sang in the choir at Chapel 1 on Lowry AFB and was on the very first music album the choir completed and released. She was a member of Restoration Christian Fellowship in Aurora, CO. She loved gardening and kept a garden plot on the military base until she and her husband built her one in their back yard. She would always invite people to stop by and get some greens (to cook and clean themselves). She loved to cook and was also a top-notch beautician. She fixed her sister’s hair as well as people in the community before she married and moved away. In her later years, she loved to travel back to NC with her daughter Katrina to attend her high school alumni functions, family reunions, and to be surrounded by family and friends. She was a 1960 graduate of Frederick Douglass High School.
