988 goes live on July 16th. This is a great step forward in getting people in need in touch with emergency mental health services.

While this is so exciting, there are some concerns about funding. As of now only Colorado, Nevada, Washington, and Virginia have allocated enough comprehensive funding to cover this new service and expected surge in calls with the new easy to remember number.

We need to do better.

Happy Pride Month! 🏳️‍🌈

It is important to remember why we celebrate Pride Month. We celebrate the long way we’ve come in LGBTQ+ rights and acknowledge the long way we have to go.

We remember the Stonewall riots. We remember the amazing LGBTQ+ leaders who started it all including Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera.

We celebrate all the activists including Harvey Milk, Barbara Gittings (she helped get homosexuality removed from the DSM), Audre Lorde, Edith Windsor, Larry Kramer, Randy Wicker, Billie Jean King, and Gilbert Baker (creator of the pride flag).

We celebrate our LGBTQ+ celebrities and influencers including Laverne Cox, Elliot Page, RuPaul, Lena Waithe, the Fab Five, and Pete Buttigieg to name a few.

As Mental Health Awareness Month comes to an end, this is your reminder that mental health awareness is important ALL YEAR LONG and not just in the month of May. 💚

We need to do better with mental health. We need to reduce the stigma, we need to make it more accessible and affordable, we need to provide better prevention and maintenance services (insurance also needs to work on covering these better), we need to do more screening for mental health issues, we need insurance to cover psychological and psycho-educational testing better, and we need to put significantly more mental health support in our school systems. Our current system for mental health treatment and preventative services is woefully inadequate. Help us change it!

There’s way to appropriately talk to people about mental health. Diminishing them or telling them it is all in there head is anything but helpful and very harmful. You wouldn’t tell someone with an autoimmune disorder like Crohn’s disease to just “get better” - same thing applies here!
