Technique Tuesday: Treating Runner’s Knee

In those clients presenting with runner’s knee, there may be multiple biomechanical imbalances at play. The most common involve the hip and ankle joints. So, instead of directing treatment to the knee itself, I first assess and treat movement pattern dysfunctions (MPDs).

Movement Pattern Dysfunctions are complex, motor-learned programs ultimately governed by the brain. These ingrained faulty movement patterns develop from muscle imbalances, joint restrictions, poor stability, or previous injury.

To assess and treat, I first address alignment problems at the client’s hips, ankles and feet and then reassess knee alignment and mobility issues. The accompanying “Log Roll” video shown on this blog is one technique I commonly use for those with chronic runner’s knee pain.

MAT therapy, along with a well-designed and executed corrective exercise program, is often helpful in restoring and maintaining the movement quality of the tibiofemoral and tibiofibular joints.
