As you are celebrating and enjoying all of the many fun activities today, remember that, often times, heat, fireworks, crowds and noise can be harder on seniors than we realize! Just be sure to check in on the seniors in your life, remind those that are bed bound that tonight will likely be NOISY, and help ease their anxiety and exhaustion, making today enjoyable for all!

Now that it is a bit cooler outside, have you considered taking a senior out for some sunshine and fresh air? Sun exposure generates vitamin D, which is necessary for a healthy brain, bones and muscles. Research shows that vitamin D improves cognitive function and mood. When appropriate, a little sunshine and fresh air provides great physical, mental and emotional benefits for seniors and their caretakers.

Now that Sacramento has cooled down, take a little time to educate yourself for the next heatwave! The Institute of Aging says that the following conditions put seniors at a HIGHER RISK for heat related illness.

•Poor circulation, inefficient sweat glands, and changes in the skin caused by normal aging

•Heart, lung, and kidney diseases, as well as any illness that causes weakness or fever

•High blood pressure or other conditions that require changes in diet; for example, people on low-salt diets may face an added risk (but don’t use salt pills without asking your doctor)

•The inability to perspire caused by some drugs, including diuretics, sedatives, tranquilizers, and certain heart and blood pressure medicines

•Taking several drugs at once for various conditions; don’t just stop taking them: Talk with your doctor

•Being substantially overweight or underweight

•Drinking alcoholic beverages
