Wilton Volunteer Ambulance Corps (WVAC) is an emergency medical service that provides 911 emergency ambulance coverage to the town of Wilton, CT. We operate two state of the art equipped Basic Life Support ambulances and a full-time paramedic contracted from Norwalk Hospital responds in an Advanced Life Support equipped flycar. All our vehicles are based at the Wilton town complex which is home to the town’s Police, Fire, and Public Works departments, as well as our own headquarters, which is easily recognizable as the house upon the hill behind the fire department. It provides a comfortable and convenient headquarters for our members. As our name suggests, we are a volunteer organization. We do contract with Norwalk Hospital to provide day time coverage during the weekdays, but our members are all volunteers and cover the hours between 6pm-6am during the week and 24 hours a day on the weekends. During those shifts, a crew composed of a Crew Chief and a Driver (sometimes supplemented by a third attendant) work in conjunction with a Norwalk Hospital Paramedic to provide Emergency Medical Service to the town. We have roughly 50 members, most of whom are Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) trained to render care ranging from simple splinting of a broken finger to lifesaving emergency defibrillation using an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED). Wilton’s police, fire, and ambulance units all play major roles in the dynamic of an emergency medical call. For all ambulance calls, at least one police unit is dispatched and often arrives before the ambulance to begin rendering medical care. For more serious calls, the fire department is also dispatched to supplement police and EMS. While most scheduled crews respond to emergency calls together in the ambulance, WVAC adds another tier to the normal emergency response system. We encourage our members to participate in a system we call “Neighborhood Response.” Most of our members are actual residents or daytime employees in Wilton and are issued pagers with which they can hear and respond to calls. If one of our off-duty EMTs receives a call that is near to his/her location, he/she is encouraged to respond and begin assessing and treating the patient as yet another layer in the medical care process. This multi-tier response system ensures that every emergency medical call that comes in receives the most rapid, effective response possible.

Today ends my terms as President of WVAC. I can clearly say I was proud to serve our members and the community. As a front line emergency medical service, as did other first responders, we had a front row seat to the challenges that the Pandemic presented. We couldn’t have met those challenges without the commitment of our entire organization. The leadership team, with the assistance and guidance of the Norwalk EMS team led by Jim Brubaker, developed pandemic policies and procedures for our members to follow. These procedures were updated several times as new information became available. And I can proudly say that no volunteer member was infected with the virus while performing patient care. I want to thank our paid staff, Lynn, Diane, and Pete for their daily assistance in helping WVAC achieve its goals. But, of course most importantly I want to thank our dedicated and committed volunteers who rose to the challenge in light of the dangers that the job presented. Our volunteers accepted the risk of contracting the virus or bringing it home to family members in order to complete our mission to serve the community. They all knew the risks , but followed through with their commitment to serve the community. We came out of this crisis a stronger, larger and better prepared volunteer organization. Thank you all, John Miscioscia

WVAC is sad to announce the passing of the organizations founder and past President Edward Thomas (Tom) Wetzel. Tom founded WVAC in 1977 and served many years as the President. Tom was very instrumental in putting our history together when we celebrated our 40th anniversary in 2017. Tom passed peacefully in his home at the age of 83. Our condolences go out to his wife, Christine and the rest of his family. Thank you for starting us on our emergency services journey to serve the Town, rest in peace.

The true meaning of volunteering
If you look up in the dictionary the definition of a volunteer or volunteerism it would say “a person who voluntarily undertakes or expresses a willingness to undertake a service” and “the act or practice of doing volunteer work for the community.”
As we all know people volunteer for numerous types of tasks at places like their house of worship, schools, food banks, soup kitchens and at senior centers just to name a few.
But the dictionary definition does no justice, especially in this past year, to the men and women who volunteer their time in the fire and ems services. While the motivation of these people to don turnout gear or treat a patient in critical condition varies person to person. Some volunteer as a career path, to serve their community, as a repayment for something another volunteer did for them, or personal gratification, but the common thread is they all chose to volunteer.
For those that don’t know, volunteers in both services must go through the same state mandated training qualifications as the professional firefighters and ems personnel do to serve their community and they also must complete ongoing training requirements to maintain their certifications. Being on duty or attending training sessions all means time away from their family, families that show great support for what they do, so it’s not just the volunteer making the commitment.
The past 12 months have been very challenging to these volunteers, especially in the ems service. Our members, not knowing all the dangers of the pandemic, took on the challenges and stepped forward and doing whatever it took to serve their community.
But as the saying goes you should always look for the positive takeaways from what you encountered and this pandemic is no different. The pandemic has strengthen our concept of working as a team. We implemented new procedural changes to better protect our members. We made significant enhancements to our training and education processes. And were shown great appreciation from many Town residents with their financial support to purchase better protective gear and meals for the duty crews and their letters of appreciation, they went a long way for our members knowing our work didn’t go unnoticed.
I want to thank all for those that have chosen to volunteer and their families that support them in their journey. Stay safe and stand tall.
