Today we celebrate International Mother Language Day 🌎💬

Led by UNESCO, this day honors linguistic and cultural diversity around the world, and as a pediatric bilingual therapy practice, it’s a celebration close to our hearts. 💛

At Southshore Bilingual Therapy, we believe a child’s home language is a strength, not a barrier. Research continues to show that supporting a child in their mother language builds stronger family connections, supports cognitive development, and lays the foundation for academic success. Most importantly, it preserves identity, culture, and belonging.

📚🕷️ Speech + Storytime = So Much Learning! 🐄🐖🐎

At Southshore Bilingual Therapy, we LOVE turning a favorite book like The Very Busy Spider by Eric Carle into an engaging, language-rich experience!

Here’s a fun therapy idea you can try:

✨ Target Engagement During Shared Reading
We bring the story to life using farm animal toys and a pesty little fly! As each animal appears, children help place them in front of, in back of, above, or under the spider’s web to act out the story. Hands-on play = increased attention and participation!

✨ Practice Prepositions
“Put the fly in front of the rooster.”
“Is the fly behind the horse?”
“Place the fly above the spider!”

✨ Answering WHAT Questions
Pause and ask:
👉 “What animal is next?”
👉 “What is the spider making?”
👉 “What does the dog want?”

Embedding movement, play, and visuals keeps children engaged while naturally building vocabulary, comprehension, and expressive language skills.

Our friend is exploring a Valentine’s themed sensory bin filled with glittery putty and festive trinkets. We’re using this simple play activity to practice taking turns and expanding utterances like “I found a heart,” “My turn to pull,” and “I see a chocolate donut!” Everyday moments like this are powerful chances to build language, social skills, and confidence.
