Happy International Women’s Day!

The theme for International Women's Day 2026 is 'Give to Gain’. The colors used for this significant day are purple, green, and white. Give to Gain highlights the power of reciprocity when individuals, organizations and communities invest in women. When women have access to health and rights, the benefits extend far beyond individuals- families are healthier, health systems are stronger, economies grow and societies become more just and sustainable.

We extend a huge thank you to ALL women who have pioneered the way for us- Marsha P. Johnson, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Shirley Chisholm, Rosa Parks, Maya Angelou, Nikki Giovanni, to name a few.

It’s a late post, but we aren’t letting the day go by without recognizing Black Balloon Day.
A day of remembrance. A day of awareness. And a day of love for the lives lost to the disease of addiction.
🖤 Who's life are you honoring today?

Black Balloon Day honors the sons, daughters, mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, and friends whose lives were taken too soon. Each black balloon represents a life, a story, a human being who is missed by someone who loved them.

Addiction does not discriminate. It touches every community, every gender, every socioeconomic status.

Today we hold space for grief and remembrance. We continue the fight for recovery, and the advocacy for harm reduction programs, making sure more people get the chance to live.
If you have lost someone, we remember them with you today. 🖤

Black History Month Housing Trailblazer

The Fair Housing Act, passed in 1968, was in part a tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who wanted to eliminate all forms of discrimination that did not afford equal opportunities for all people. Almost sixty years later legislation being introduced by HUD (US Department of Housing and Urban Development’s) threatened to move away from the ideas and laws that protect and ensure equality for all, especially for those that are the most vulnerable in American, making fair housing more of privilege than a right.

Under the leadership of Lisa Rice, President & CEO of The National Fair Housing Alliance (NFHA) these proposed changes that are discriminatory, unfair, and unlawful are being denounced. Lisa Rice is a published author contributing to several books and journals addressing a range of fair housing issues. She played a major role in crafting sections of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act. She has also helped investigate and resolve housing cases that resolved and eliminated several systemic discriminatory practices. She has received numerous honors and awards including the National Housing Conference’s Housing Visionary Award in 2023 and was named one of Time’s 2024 Closers.

Advocacy has no age as is shown through the work of Hydeia Broadbent. Hydeia was born with HIV in 1984, abandoned at birth and later adopted. At the early age of six, Hydeia began advocating for those living with HIV, appearing with Magic Johnson in 1992 and delivering her famous speech at the Republican National Convention in 1996, proclaiming "I am the future, and I have AIDS." We celebrate Hydeia this month along with the other countless African American activists, advocating for equitable services for those living with HIV.

Celebrating Black History Month and activists in the harm reduction movement.

Today we spotlight Imani Woods.

Imani Woods was born in Bedford-Stuyvesant, known as Bed-Stuy, in Brooklyn, NY, and she dedicated her life to bettering the lives of Black people and people who use drugs across the country. She worked as a civil servant at the Human Resources Administration and was a staunch opponent of needle exchange and harm reduction. In 1989, Woods lost her “soul brother,” Keith, a former intravenous drug user, to a 5-year battle with HIV. Woods and Keith were relenting in their opposition to needle exchange, describing the idea as “ineffective, immoral, crazy, ridiculous.”

Woods saw syringe exchange in action in 1989 and during her first trip to downtown Seattle, Woods began her “conversion from being an outspoken opponent of needle exchange to being a firm supporter.” She became the founder and executive director of the harm reduction organization Street Outreach Services (SOS) in Seattle and was also a founding member of NHRC (then Harm Reduction Coalition).

Imani passed away in 2015, but Woods’ legacy lives on as Black leadership inside and outside of harm reduction continues to be fostered nationwide and the harm reduction movement addresses and heals the harms caused by racialized drug policies.
