When temperatures drop below freezing and wind chills are harsh, staying warm and safe is important. Dress in layers, cover exposed skin, and limit time outdoors when possible. Keep gloves, hats, and socks dry since wet clothing can cause your body to lose heat quickly.
If you’re shoveling snow, take it slow. Shoveling can put a lot of strain on your heart, especially in cold air. Warm up first, push snow when you can instead of lifting, take frequent breaks, and avoid heavy meals or smoking right before you shovel. If you feel chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, or unusual fatigue, stop immediately and seek medical attention.
