Why Do Many Hospitals Still Underuse Minimally Invasive Surgery?

Minimally invasive techniques offer clear benefits to patients—but adoption still varies widely between hospitals.

Several factors contribute to this gap:

Training differences
Many surgeons trained during periods when open surgery was the standard approach.

Technology access
Advanced laparoscopic and robotic platforms require investment and institutional support.

Operational barriers
Hospital workflows and operating room resources can influence which procedures are performed.

Yet evidence consistently shows that minimally invasive hysterectomy approaches are associated with shorter hospitalization and improved recovery compared with open abdominal surgery.

Expanding education, mentorship, and collaboration is essential to closing this gap.

At American Institute of Minimally Invasive Surgery, we work to support physicians and healthcare institutions in advancing surgical training and improving outcomes for women.

👀 Things surgeons notice in the first 2 seconds… that patients never see

Before a single incision matters, a surgeon is already reading the room:

• How tissue responds
• Subtle bleeding patterns
• Anatomy variations
• Instrument positioning
• Team coordination

These aren’t things you learn from a textbook.

They come from experience, repetition, and hands-on training.

Because surgery isn’t just knowledge—
it’s awareness.

At American Institute of Minimally Invasive Surgery, we focus on building that awareness through education that goes beyond theory.

💬 What’s something only surgeons notice that others don’t?

👩‍⚕️ Physician of the Week: Dr. Kayla Rowles

This week, we are proud to highlight Dr. Kayla Rowles, an OB/GYN at Intermountain Health, part of the AIMIS Practice of Excellence network.

Dr. Rowles brings a unique and thoughtful perspective to women’s healthcare. She earned dual degrees in Molecular and Cell Biology and Gender and Women’s Studies from the University of California, Berkeley—an academic foundation that reflects both scientific excellence and a deep understanding of patient-centered care.

Before becoming a physician, she worked as a licensed phlebotomist, gaining hands-on clinical experience that continues to shape her compassionate approach today. She later earned her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Touro University Nevada and completed her OB/GYN residency with the Sunrise Health Graduate Medical Consortium in Las Vegas.

Dr. Rowles is passionate about being an inclusive provider, building meaningful connections with her patients, and creating a supportive environment where women feel heard and empowered.

Outside of medicine, she enjoys cooking, reading romance novels, camping—and spending time with her Corgi, Jelly. (And if she weren’t a physician, she’d be a florist 🌸)

👩‍⚕️ Why Minimally Invasive Surgery Matters for Patients

For many women facing gynecologic surgery, the surgical approach can make a significant difference in recovery and overall outcomes.

Research shows that patients undergoing minimally invasive hysterectomy experience significantly shorter hospital stays and faster recovery compared with traditional open abdominal surgery. In fact, minimally invasive approaches can reduce hospital stay by 1–2 days on average and are associated with fewer postoperative complications.

Despite these advantages, access to minimally invasive surgical techniques still varies across hospitals and regions.

That’s why organizations like American Institute of Minimally Invasive Surgery focus on advancing physician education, collaboration, and training to help expand access to minimally invasive procedures for women everywhere.

When surgical education advances, patients benefit.

⚡ Are We Training Surgeons Fast Enough for New Technology?

Robotic platforms, advanced visualization, surgical analytics, and AI-assisted tools are transforming the field of surgery at an incredible pace.

But a critical question remains:

Is surgical training evolving just as quickly?

While technology continues to advance, the adoption of new techniques often depends on access to education, mentorship, and hands-on training opportunities.

Surgeons today must continuously adapt—learning not only new procedures, but also how to integrate data, robotics, and digital tools into their practice.

At American Institute of Minimally Invasive Surgery, our mission is to help bridge that gap through webinars, conferences, collaboration, and physician-led education programs designed to support surgeons as technology continues to evolve.

Because the future of surgery isn’t just about innovation—it’s about ensuring surgeons have the training to use it effectively.

💬 What do you think—are we moving fast enough in surgical education?

🩺 What Makes a Great Minimally Invasive Surgeon?

Technology is evolving quickly—robotics, surgical data analytics, advanced visualization—but the most important element in surgery is still the surgeon behind the console.

Great minimally invasive surgeons share several key traits:

• Continuous learning – staying current with evolving techniques and technologies
• Precision and discipline – mastering complex procedures through training and experience
• Data-driven improvement – analyzing surgical performance to refine technique
• Collaboration – learning from peers and sharing knowledge with the surgical community

At American Institute of Minimally Invasive Surgery, our mission is to support physicians in developing these skills through education, mentorship, and collaboration with leaders in minimally invasive surgery.

Because advancing surgical care doesn’t happen alone—it happens through community and shared knowledge.

💛 Endometriosis Awareness Month: Emerging Conversations Around Metabolic Health

Endometriosis remains one of the most complex conditions in women’s health, affecting millions of women and often associated with chronic pelvic pain, inflammation, and hormonal imbalance.

Recently, researchers have begun exploring how metabolic health and GLP-1 receptor agonists—medications commonly used for diabetes and weight management—may influence inflammatory pathways involved in gynecologic conditions.

Early studies suggest that GLP-1 signaling may play a role in reducing inflammation and improving metabolic pathways, both of which can influence reproductive health. While GLP-1 therapies are not currently approved to treat endometriosis, research continues to investigate their potential role in addressing systemic inflammation and metabolic dysfunction that may contribute to disease progression.

For patients living with endometriosis, treatment still relies on a multidisciplinary approach, including hormonal therapies, pain management, and when appropriate, minimally invasive surgical excision performed by experienced surgeons.

At American Institute of Minimally Invasive Surgery, we support education, research, and collaboration among physicians to improve diagnosis and treatment for women living with endometriosis.

Awareness and continued research are key to advancing care and improving quality of life for patients.

💛 March is Endometriosis Awareness Month

Endometriosis remains one of the most underdiagnosed conditions in women’s health. Studies show that it can take an average of 7–10 years for many women to receive a proper diagnosis, leaving millions managing chronic pelvic pain and other symptoms without clear answers.

This diagnostic delay highlights the importance of education, awareness, and access to specialists trained in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery.

At American Institute of Minimally Invasive Surgery, we are committed to improving outcomes for women with endometriosis by supporting physician education, advanced surgical training, and collaboration across a national network of experts in minimally invasive surgery.

Through conferences, webinars, and educational initiatives, AIMIS helps equip physicians with the knowledge and surgical skills needed to diagnose and treat complex conditions like endometriosis more effectively.

During Endometriosis Awareness Month, we recognize the importance of listening to patients, advancing surgical education, and continuing to push for earlier diagnosis and better care.
