Music has the power to make us feel so many things.

For World Music Therapy Week, our team of MT-BCs came together to share songs we like to listen to when we want to feel happy, calm, motivated, and seen. We created four emotion-based playlists that reflect the wide variety of music we each gravitate toward to support different feelings. Not only are these playlists a great way to explore new music that might support emotional regulation, they’re also a fun way to get to know our team through the music that resonates with us!

In music therapy, getting to know an individual’s music preferences is a key part of the process. The songs we connect with can support emotional expression, regulation, motivation, and meaningful connection. Just like our team, every client brings their own unique musical identity into the space, and we use that to support their personal goals!!

🎧 Please note: Some songs on these playlists may contain explicit lyrics or themes, listener discretion is advised!

✨ We’d love to hear from you!
What songs make you feel:
• Happy
• Calm
• Motivated
• Seen or understood

And be sure to check out the “I Feel Happy 😁,” “I Feel Calm 🧘,” “I Feel Motivated 💪,” and “I Feel Seen ☺️” playlists created by Spencer D. Cole on Spotify.

Happy World Music Therapy Week from all of us at GSMT! 🎶✨

This week, we’re celebrating the impact of music therapy and the meaningful work of music therapists around the world. What started as a single day of recognition has grown into a full week, thanks to the World Federation of Music Therapy (WFMT), creating more space to share, learn, and celebrate the power of music therapy in a thoughtful and inclusive way!

🎵 Why does music therapy matter?
Music therapy is the clinical, evidence-based use of music to support individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship. Using client-preferred music, music therapists help address needs across multiple areas, including:
• Communication
• Emotional expression and regulation
• Cognitive skills
• Social connection
• Physical movement
• Overall quality of life
• And more!

Whether it’s developing coping skills, building confidence, improving communication, or creating meaningful moments of connection, music therapy meets individuals where they are and supports them in reaching their personal goals through the power of music!

✨ We’d love for you to celebrate with us, share in the comments:
• A favorite song 🎶
• A shoutout to a music therapist 💙
• Or how music impacts your life!!

And keep an eye out this week for more World Music Therapy Week celebrations!

Although it’s been a slow start to spring here in New England, our team is still making the most of it! Getting outside, enjoying the sunshine (when possible) ☀️, and taking in everything nature has to offer.

Two of our amazing music therapists, Elizabeth and Mike, are pictured here on a recent run 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️, it’s always impressive how these two can run and chat at the same time!

As the weather begins to warm up, we encourage you to spend some time outside! Whether it’s a walk, time with friends, or simply enjoying a quiet moment in nature. Taking time to reset and recharge can make a big difference. ✨

🍀Hello GSMT Family! Happy Music Therapy Monday and early Happy St. Patrick's Day! 🍀

Today we’re spotlighting one of our amazing music therapists, Spencer Cole, MT-BC, who is sharing a fun and engaging music activity using the traditional Irish song “Ciorcal, Cearnóg, Triantán.” This playful song invites participants to sing, move, and learn while practicing Irish vocabulary for shapes, colors, and body parts.

🎶 English Translation:
Circle, square, triangle
Yellow banana and white milk
Eyes, ears, mouth, head
I have two hands and just one nose!

🇮🇪 Lyrics in Irish:
Ciorcal, cearnóg, triantán
Banana buí agus bainne bán
Súile, cluasa, béal, ceann
Dhá láimh agus srón amháin!

In music therapy, songs like this are a great way to celebrate culture and holidays while also supporting therapeutic goals. Singing and moving along can help address skills such as:

🎵 Gross and fine motor movement
🎵 Vocalization and speech practice
🎵 Following directions
🎵 Body awareness
🎵 Group participation and social engagement
🎵 Cognitive skills

Music therapy creates opportunities to learn, connect, and celebrate together, all while working toward meaningful goals.

🌸 Hello GSMT Family! Happy Music Therapy Monday!

This week we’re celebrating the contributions of women in the field of music therapy in recognition of International Women's Day (yesterday).

Women have played an essential role in shaping music therapy through clinical practice, research, advocacy, and education. Today, music therapists support individuals across the lifespan in hospitals, schools, mental health settings, rehabilitation programs, and community organizations, helping people use music to reach meaningful therapeutic goals.

One influential leader in the field is Barbara Wheeler. Dr. Wheeler is a music therapist, educator, and researcher whose books and publications have helped shape music therapy education and clinical practice around the world. Her work was also one of my first introductions to the field when I began researching music therapy, and it helped open the door to understanding the importance and possibilities of this profession.

Music therapy can also offer meaningful support for women of all ages and backgrounds. Through structured musical experiences such as songwriting, lyric analysis, improvisation, movement, and group music-making, participants can explore identity, reflect on personal experiences, and practice expressing emotions in a supportive environment. Music therapy can support emotional regulation, stress management, confidence-building, and communication skills. In group settings, shared musical experiences can also foster connection and reduce isolation, creating space for individuals to support and learn from one another.

At GSMT, we are grateful for the women who make up our community. From the clinicians who bring expertise, compassion, and creativity to every session, to the individuals and families we serve who inspire growth, resilience, and joy, women play a vital role in shaping the work we do every day. Their leadership, collaboration, and dedication help drive innovation, foster community, and create a supportive space where music can transform lives.

Who is a woman in your life who inspires you?

🌟 Hello GSMT Family! 🌟

We’re thrilled to bring back Music Therapy Mondays! For our first post of the month, we’re celebrating growth as we look ahead to spring, hoping the snow starts to melt, the sun begins to shine, and new possibilities emerge.

In music therapy, growth can take many forms, no matter age, abilities, or diagnoses. Whether working with children, teens, adults, or older adults, music therapy provides a safe, supportive, and creative space to explore change, practice new skills, and connect with others.

🎵 Growth can happen through:
- Communication & self-expression
- Emotional regulation
- Cognitive skills like attention, memory, and sequencing
- Social connection & turn-taking
- Motor coordination & movement

🎵 Growth might look like:
- Initiating a conversation
- Trying a new coping strategy
- Taking a solo during group music-making
- Maintaining eye contact
- Using rhythm to regulate breathing
- Expressing a feeling safely
- Recalling a meaningful memory
- Completing a song from memory
- Participating with confidence
- Keeping a steady beat with others

No matter how big or small it feels, every step forward matters. Music therapy meets each person exactly where they are, helping them build confidence, independence, and joy.

As we move into this season of renewal, we invite you to reflect: What does growth look like for you right now? Where might music help you stretch, explore, or reconnect this spring?

Our hearts are with the individuals, families, clinicians, students, and community members who are feeling fear, uncertainty, or pain right now.

We stand with the New England Region of the American Music Therapy Association and support their recent statement condemning the harm being caused by current ICE enforcement actions. We believe it’s important to say clearly: no one should have to live in fear of being detained, separated from loved ones, or harmed simply for existing in their community.

At GSMT, we work with people across many walks of life. We see how deeply fear and instability affect mental health, sense of safety, and connection, not just locally, but far beyond our immediate communities. These impacts ripple outward, touching families, care providers, educators, and neighbors everywhere.

We want our clients, colleagues, and community members to know that you are not alone. We stand alongside those who are directly impacted, as well as those who are holding space, supporting loved ones, and carrying this weight quietly.

As NER-AMTA shared, “As helping professionals, we have an ethical responsibility to name this harm and to offer support, advocacy, and resources wherever possible.” We hold that responsibility close and remain committed to care, compassion, and dignity for all.

Local resources and support can be found through NER-AMTA’s regional resource guide here: https://www.musictherapynewengland.org/resources-2/

With care and solidarity,
The GSMT Team
