This Research Matters

Nurse burnout isn’t just a buzzword — it’s a well-documented, global healthcare crisis. Burnout is strongly linked with emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and a reduced sense of accomplishment, and research shows it has far-reaching effects on both nurses and the patients they care for.

A large systematic review found nurse burnout is associated with lower patient safety, more infections, patient falls, medication errors, and poorer perceived quality of care across thousands of nurses worldwide.

Other studies show that burnout among nurses remains a pervasive obstacle to quality care and safety in healthcare systems — and that traditional efforts often fall short.
