Know the facts and support optometry!

Maine, like many communities in the U.S., lacks adequate access to eye care, exacerbated by a growing shortage of ophthalmologists. Recent research finds allowing U.S. optometrists to perform more advanced tasks increases access to vital eye care services among Medicare enrollees.

Study highlights include -

• In roughly the past three decades, the per capita number of ophthalmologists has declined by 9.8 percent while the per capita number of optometrists has grown 45.7 percent.

• In states that have expanded scope of practice, optometrists have performed nearly 150,000 YAG surgeries, with only two examples of negative outcomes or complications.

The numbers are clear: Maine’s ophthalmologists cannot meet the current demand of patients, leading to longer wait times for patients who need critical eye health services.

Optometrists practice in 15 of Maine’s 16 counties, providing eye care access to 92% of our state’s population.

Three counties don’t have any ophthalmologists, and two counties have only one.

Think sunglasses are just for summer? Think again! 😎

How much light is reflected (rough averages):

Fresh snow: ~80–90% ❄️ (brutal)

Dry sand: ~15–30% 🏜️

Water: ~5–10% (can spike when the sun is low) 🏖️

Why snow wins the glare Olympics 🏆

It’s bright everywhere: Snow reflects light in all directions, not just at one angle.

High UV reflection: Snow bounces UV rays straight into your eyes, increasing the risk of snow blindness.

Cold doesn’t feel dangerous: Your brain doesn’t associate snow with “sun damage,” so people underestimate it.

Altitude bonus: Snowy environments are often higher up, where UV radiation is stronger.

At Metayer Family Eye Care we can help you select a pair of sunglasses that will protect your precious eyes. We make prescription sunglasses as well!

Due to the snow storm we will be closed on Monday, January 26th. Stay warm and safe! ⛄️
