Today is the winter solstice. This day marks the beginning of winter, and is known as “the longest night.” Many places in North America will receive only 8 or 9 hours of daylight as the Earth’s axis is tilted away from the sun, and the sun reaches its southernmost point in the sky. From this day forward, the days will begin to lengthen, a reminder that spring is just around the corner.

For our family, today marks 10 years since Bruce’s passing. We are keenly aware that for many, the holiday season is indeed “the longest night.” Not all is merry, and not all is bright. There are no words that can fill empty spaces in many hearts and homes this Christmas. No matter how many Christmases have been celebrated without your loved one, don’t stop sharing stories that keep their memory alive. In the last 10 years, many acts of kindness have sustained our family and for that we are immeasurably thankful. If you are able to pass on kindness to someone around you, take that opportunity this holiday season.

We encourage you with the promises found in Isaiah 9, “The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned…For to us a Child is born, to us a Son is given…He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

May God bless your homes as you gather together this Christmas, even if Christmas doesn’t look the way you expected it to. Cling to hope found in the true Light shining brightly in the darkness.

From our family to yours, we wish you a very Merry Christmas.
