🏈 More Than Your Diagnosis: Mark Andrews

Did you know that NFL tight end Mark Andrews lives with Type 1 diabetes?

Diagnosed at age 9, Mark never let T1D sideline his dreams. From college football at the University of Oklahoma to becoming a standout tight end for the Baltimore Ravens, he’s shown that managing diabetes and competing at the highest level can go hand in hand.

Mark has spoken openly about checking his blood sugar during games and staying disciplined with his care—proving that preparation, technology, and teamwork make anything possible.

💙 Volunteer Appreciation Spotlight 💙

Annie is another example of how camp stays with you. After many years as a camper, she’s come back as a volunteer to give that same magic to others.

Her firsthand camp experience, big heart, and willingness to help wherever needed make a real impact. We’re so grateful she continues to give back to the place that helped shape her.

Thank you, Annie — camp is better because of you! 🌟

🍕✨ Happy World Pizza Day! If you’re living with type 1 diabetes, you don’t have to skip the slice — just make it work for your body! 🎉🧠

Here are some smart tips to enjoy your pizza while keeping your blood sugar in check:
• Watch carbs & portions — pizza can be high in carbs, so counting and matching insulin is key. Thin crust or alternative crusts (like cauliflower or whole grain) can help lower the carb load.
• Choose veggie toppings & lean proteins — fiber and protein slow digestion and help steady glucose.
• Consider insulin timing & dosing — talking with your diabetes care team about how to dose for high-fat, high-carb meals can make a big difference. Some people use split or extended boluses to match digestion.
• Pair with a salad or non-starchy veggies — this fills you up and adds fiber that can reduce blood-sugar spikes.

Pizza can definitely be part of your celebrations — just make it part of a balanced, mindful meal plan! ❤️🍕

✨ More Than Your Diagnosis: Nia Kay ✨

Nia Kay isn’t just a name or a label — she’s a rapper, songwriter, actress, and advocate using her voice to inspire others. 🌟

At just 3 years old, Nia was diagnosed with T1D. But instead of letting that define her, she’s turned it into part of her purpose and platform. 🎶 “Go Best Friend” — one of her singles — highlights the importance of community, encouragement, and living life to the fullest. The song and its music video also feature her real-life experiences with managing type 1 diabetes, helping spread awareness and support.

She is a reminder that your identity is bigger than a label

102 years ago today, the first human insulin treatment was given to a young patient named Leonard Thompson — a moment that changed the course of diabetes care forever. Before insulin, there were no effective therapies and diabetes was considered a fatal diagnosis; after insulin, there was hope.

From Banting, Best, Macleod, and Collip’s groundbreaking research to the innovations of modern T1D technology, we honor the legacy that began on January 23, 1922 — and the countless lives saved since. 💙

Raise the Jolly Roger for Captain Frankie! Once a young deck-swabber charting his first course—now a fearless volunteer captain steering his crew through every wave. Frankie brings heart, spirit, and leadership worth more than all the gold in the galley. If volunteers were treasure, our ship would be overflowing! Captain Frankie truly rocks the seven seas!

Life with type 1 diabetes isn’t always a straight sprint. Some days you’re soaring through sensor changes, carb counts, and highs and lows without blinking. Other days feel slower, heavier, or unpredictable — and that’s okay.

As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. reminded us:
“If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.”

At HDYC and Camp Setebaid, we see that spirit every summer. Whether you’re learning something new, trying something brave, or simply showing up again — forward is forward. 💙
