Included in this week's training is ultrasound-guided IV insertion. Thank goodness they are not practicing on their classmates! Have you worn pink to recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM)? Our students, faculty and staff wore pink in honor of all women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. Did you know that breast cancer death rates in the U.S. have dropped by 44% since 1989? This is an amazing accomplishment in diagnosing and treating breast cancer! In the U.S.,1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. Support breast cancer research so that survival rates continue to improve! Meet Lickity Split, better known as Splitty! She is a seven-year old Border Collie-Australian Shepherd mix. Splitty and her owner, Dina Zaphiris, visited the Hendersonville campus to entertain and delight everyone with her dancing skills and amazing athletic abilities. Splitty can dance, strut, make the basket (hoop), put away her toys in the basket, skateboard, and so many other fun things. She loves her treats, and to be petted and loved by everyone. Dina has trained dogs for over 30 years, including search and rescue, and cancer detection training. We all loved spending time with Splitty and Dina! www.dinazaphiris.com

The Class of 2026 is getting closer to the end of Transitions! In a few more weeks, they start rotations! For now, students are applying what they learned in didactic semesters to weekly hands-on skills. This week students are learning and practicing clinical skills for general surgery. Suturing, removing toenails, and incising and draining abscesses are samples of the different practicals students are experiencing this week. Hope no one is squeamish!

Our Transitions students stay busy, even on their fall break! One of the many assignments in Transitions includes a community service project. Students are divided into groups, and given the assignment to develop and deliver a project that promotes the PA profession. Students complete these projects during PA Week, and must submit a group reflection following completion. Dr. Chrystyna Senkel, Transitions professor, has selected two groups as her favorites this year.
A Hendersonville campus group, The Care Bears, consisted of Katie Huffman, Willow Scarbrough, Chelsea Hector, Jennifer Lopez-Miranda, Charsley Johnson, and Christian Singleton. The Care Bears gave a presentation to a local high school health science class to raise awareness of the PA profession and inspire students who are interested in healthcare careers.
A Wingate campus group, the Hemoglobin Trotters, consisted of Ebrie Franklin, Olivia Johnson, Naomi Corns, Nicole Bodner, Morgan McMahon, Shelly Choi, and Wheeler Davis. The Hemoglobin Trotters engaged with Wingate campus undergraduate pre-health students to provide information as to what a PA-C can do in practice, and what the Wingate PA program can offer.
Congratulations to all the student groups for successful community service projects promoting the PA profession!

Our Story

Nestled in among the rolling Blue Ridge Mountains and 22 miles south of Asheville, NC, Hendersonville is a delightful small city that is becoming a popular travel destination. Beyond the charms of Mother Nature, Hendersonville offers Wingate University graduate students the opportunity to hone their skills in a $32 million state-of-the-art Health Sciences Center. This building, a partnership between Henderson County, Pardee UNC Health Care, Blue Ridge Community College, the city of Hendersonville and Wingate University, contains smart classrooms, well-equipped laboratories, soft spaces for study and faculty offices. Students will have direct access to patients as well as collaborative learning experiences.

For students pursuing their Doctor of Pharmacy degree, courses complement practical experiences and many include case-based learning. Rotations begin first year.
