Today, my firstborn, the one who made me a mom, is SIX. 🥹 He has taught me so so much in these six years, more than I’ve taught him. Being a parent is so much harder than I thought it would be, but the cliché is true: it is soooooo worth it. I love seeing him grow into his own person with his own thoughts and opinions. I always say he’s my mini-me, but really, he’s perfectly himself. I love you so much, buddy. ❤️

So just what is an Integrative Lactation and Feeding Specialist? My friend Kate Soloff put it best:

“An Integrative Lactation and Feeding Specialist is a training by Manhattan Birth. A wonderful group of Childbirth Educators that includes midwives, nurses, IBCLCs, nutritionists, doulas, and more. The idea for ILFS is to help meet folks where they are in their feeding journey. We want to learn more about who is feeding your baby and how you want to do it! No more of this "Breast is best" or "Fed is best" dichotomy. Your family decides what is best for your baby. We can help you get that initial latch and figure out the ins and outs of body feeding. We can also help you with your pump and pumping schedule. We can explain paced bottle feeding. We can talk about formula. We can help you find donor milk. And we can support you with any combination of this because we are here to help. I utilize my training in my doula practice. There are a vast network of ILFSs and we are here to support you. If we don't know the answer to something, we know who to refer you to. Just remember, these choices are yours and YOU GOT THIS. Parenting is hard but it's a lot easier when you have a village. Feel free to DM me with questions and if you know birthing or postpartum individuals looking for a doula, send them my way.”

The next cohort of ILFS kicks off next week! Registration is still open. I would take this training every year if I could; it’s that good!

Two years ago yesterday, I became a mama for a second time. Amaya’s birth was faster and postpartum was easier the second time around, partly because I knew what to expect and partly because I prepared for it. I’m so happy to have this little one in my life; she brings so much joy to our family.

Today is my birthday, but I don’t want to talk about myself. I want to talk about my mom, Christina, because 34 years ago today, she became a mom.

My mom made it tradition to tell my sister and I about our birth days every year on our birthdays. Here’s how the story goes: She spent her (unbeknownst to her) last baby-free evening grouting the kitchen tile. Labor was long; according to her, baby took her time. She endured horrible back labor because, as she put it, her baby was born “sunny-side up”, but it was all worth it when her baby was placed in her arms. She felt like her heart would explode from all the love she felt for this new little person.

In the years to come, she would teach this little baby to love, to be kind, to work hard, to take up space in male-dominated spaces, when to compromise and when to hold her ground, and so many other life lessons. She babied her baby when she had babies, and even moved close to help out so her baby can work towards her dreams.

Mommy, I love you so much. Thank you for bringing me into the world on this day. Happy giving birth day ❤️

It’s the last day of World Doula Week, and I can’t let this week end without shouting out my fellow Winnemucca doulas: Camisha and Karissa! We believe in collaboration, not competition, and we are better doulas when we work together.

✨Camisha Spears, Splendid Birth Doula Services: Camisha loves all things birth - her fascination began at a young age and only grew stronger, putting her on the path to birth work. She loves learning and is usually continuing her doula education with different courses. Her calm, comforting presence is one of the many things her clients love about her. Camisha provides birth doula services, birth planning, and breastfeeding counseling & support. Fun fact: Camisha loves animals and has five fur babies!

✨Karissa Hartung, Heart 2 Hart Doula: Karissa is a mom of 4 who noticed a lack of connection in her prenatal, birth, and postpartum care. This realization sparked her interest in birth work. She is passionate about supporting pregnant teens so they have positive birth and postpartum experiences. Karissa offers both birth and postpartum services. Fun fact: Karissa is an adrenaline j***y for anything in the sky - sky diving, bungee jumping, and zip lining, to name a few!

✨Rachael Zamora, Sagebrush Doula (me!): While I love birth, postpartum is my jam! While everyone else is all about baby, I’m all about the postpartum parents - they’ve just been born too! I also offer lactation and feeding services, helping families feed baby the way that works best for them all. Fun fact: I am so grateful to have Camisha and Karissa in my life!

Today is the start of World Doula Week! Doulas make a difference, whether it’s in birth, postpartum, perinatal loss, or any other big life change (yep, there are more than birth and postpartum doulas out there!)

One of the reasons I’m so passionate about postpartum work is because I truly, truly believe new parents need all the support. It’s crazy to me how little we as a society prepare soon-to-be parents for one of the biggest life changes they’ll ever go through. All our prep time in pregnancy is focused on the baby, and so many of us are completely shell-shocked at the healing (physical, mental, emotional, spiritual) that we need to do after birth. I recently posted about what postpartum doulas do, and when I tell former coworkers and acquaintances what I do now, I am met with so many comments along the lines of “that is exactly what I needed when I had my babies!” or “where were you when my kids were born?!” My goal as a postpartum doula is to be what all parents need as they grow their families: someone who takes care of some of the everyday household tasks while you soak in the newborn snuggles, someone who will bring you food, someone who will reassure you that you’re doing a great job, someone who will take care of YOU.

So what exactly do I *do* as a postpartum doula? Here’s a glimpse at some of the ways I help postpartum families ➡️

One of the best parts about postpartum doula support is that it’s completely individualized to what you need each day your doula is with you 🥰
