In high performance sport, nothing goes exactly to plan.

Travel gets disrupted, schedules shift, environments change, and the best athletes aren’t the ones with perfect routines, they’re the ones who can adapt in real time. The ones that still find a way to win even when the recovery score is nowhere close to what it should be.

In this episode of the podcast, breaks down what it really takes to prepare athletes for unpredictable environments, how to build autonomy and problem solving into training, and why coaching can’t live in a perfect, controlled setting.

As an added bonus, there’s loads of phenomenal advice for those looking for internships and GA positions in the high performance world. Great listen for all 👀

The performance and rehab worlds love complexity.

New modalities. Layered protocols. Programs that look impressive on paper. Exercises that get thousands of views on Instagram yet no one can comprehend what they’re trying to accomplish.

But if your athlete needs to get stronger, are they getting stronger?
If they need to run, are they running?

Occam’s Razor was not directly taught in my education, but it often came up in discussions over my capstone project with our program chair, Mike Fink.
Occam’s razor is the phenomenon that the simplest effective intervention is usually the right one.
Read that again. Not the most creative. Not the most marketable. The simple one is the most appropriate.

Simplicity isn’t a lack of knowledge. It’s the application of it.

In my opinion, a true expert is not the individual who makes things so complex that no one can comprehend them. It’s the one who takes even the wildest concepts and delivers them in a way anyone can understand while the original message and detail is maintained.

Most clinicians are still guessing.

We rely on tests, patterns, and experience, but rarely do we actually see what’s going on.

MSK ultrasound changes that. It bridges the gap between assessment and intervention, giving you real-time insight to make better clinical decisions, faster.

In this episode of the podcast, I’m joined by to break down how ultrasound is reshaping rehab, from diagnosis to treatment to return-to-play.

Horses and zebras
Lessons for performance and rehab providers - part 1
My story post led to way more DM convos than I expected so I decided to put some thoughts into words.

This analogy originally came to me from Mike Lehr, who I’m thankful to still have as a close friend and advisor.

We’re wired to find the interesting cases.
The rare diagnosis. The complex presentation. The case that we’ll blast all over social media for months.

Yet that’s not the majority of what you’re seeing in the performance and rehab fields, and that’s the point.

The horses not zebras principle isn’t about thinking small. It’s not about skipping steps. It’s about thinking clearly and having the discipline to rule in or rule out probables based on the information you already have.

She committed to a Division I softball program… before it even existed.

became “Player One,” helping build a program from scratch, enduring losing seasons, and eventually turning it into an ACC Champion and top-ranked team in the country.

In this episode, Peyton breaks down what it really takes to navigate that transition, the role of mental health and asking for help, and how great coaches and environments can completely shape an athlete’s career.

We also dive into her move into professional softball, balancing a full-time role in the NIL space, and what competition looks like after stepping away from the game.

The Effusion Problem: Fixing the Biggest Barrier in Recovery with Dr. Jimmy Chow

Post-operative swelling and effusion are often the biggest barriers to successful recovery after orthopedic surgery. In this episode, orthopedic surgeon Jimmy Chow joins the show to discuss why managing inflammation, monitoring recovery data, and rethinking traditional rehabilitation timelines may be key to improving patient outcomes.

We dive into the limitations of episodic healthcare, the challenge of limited PT visits, and how emerging technology, in particular may allow clinicians to track swelling, range of motion, and recovery progress remotely. The conversation explores how better data and smarter monitoring could reshape post-operative rehab and help clinicians intervene earlier when problems arise.

Pressure is a privilege.

Former U.S. Women’s National Field Hockey Team athlete joins the latest episode of the podcast to share her journey from growing up in Pennsylvania to competing on the international stage with Team USA.

Strength training is often associated with doing more.
We think we always need more.
More weight.
More volume.
More exercises
More complexity.
We associate more with better.
But what if better performance actually comes from doing less?

In this episode, I sit down with to discuss the philosophy of addition by subtraction and the concept of the minimal effective dose in sport performance. We talk about why strength coaches should focus on enhancing athletes rather than changing them, how culture and trust shape successful programs, and why the best training environments prioritize quality, autonomy, and simplicity.

For coaches and clinicians working with athletes, this conversation is a reminder that the weight room should support the sport, and not take over as the main thing.

Beyond the Diamond 🥎

In this episode, I sat down with former Division I softball player, broadcaster, and medical device professional to discuss the mental side of athletics, navigating performance pressure, and the transition from sport into life beyond the field.

Raine shares her journey from growing up competing in baseball and softball to transferring to Duke during the program’s inaugural era, the challenges of managing the demands of Division I athletics, and the lessons she learned through injury and the end of her playing career. We also discuss the importance of trust between athletes, coaches, and clinicians, the role of culture within high-performance environments, and why storytelling and authenticity matter more than ever in the modern sports landscape.

This was a thoughtful conversation about resilience, identity, and the lessons sport continues to teach long after competition ends.
This episode would not have been possible without the help of - Jordan is an incredible strength coach and will also be appearing on the podcast soon 👀

In the latest episode of the podcast, Peter “Pistol” Friesen .friesen.14 shares lessons from more than 40 years working across professional and collegiate sport. We discuss nervous system regulation, breathing for performance, dry needling, mentorship, and why experience and curiosity still drive great clinicians forward.
