We all know that drinking tea instead of a sugary beverage is so much healthier for us, but were you aware of Green Tea’s superfood status?

This antioxidant-rich tea has been used for centuries as a natural remedy to just about everything, but the main superhero here is Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a powerful phytochemical found in the tea leaves that slow irregular cell growth, which is thought to possibly be able to help prevent the growth of some cancers.

It’s suggested to drink 2-3 cups of warm Green Tea per daily to receive the maximum amount of health benefits. One study shows that drinking it cold has fewer health benefits than it’s warmed counterpart https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10837321 while another study shows that drinking it too hot could increase the risk of esophageal cancer https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21517263

So what’s the best way to enjoy it?

By simply steeping the freshly picked, unfermented leaves of the camellia sinensis plant in hot water and letting it cool just enough that it’s not piping hot.

Having trouble getting your veggies in? Blend spinach, kale, or a leafy green of your choosing with frozen fruits, half a banana, water, and some cinnamon!

Many people find that getting their veggies in smoothie form helps with palatability—aka it’s easier to drink their veggies than it is to eat them! It’s also easier to get more veggies per serving in smoothie form than salad form.

The good news is you don’t have to sacrifice your love of all things chocolate to reap the benefits that superfoods have to offer us. Dark chocolate (usually cocoa solids of at least 70%) contains flavonoids called polyphenols which help blood pressure, clotting, and inflammation.

It has been the subject of many studies in recent years and has been proven to reduce the risks and symptoms of cardiovascular disease in those who suffer or that are likely to develop it!

Dark chocolate has also been proven to be among the foods which positively benefit our mental health, having mood-boosting properties along with overall heart-helping ones.

Unfortunately, milk chocolate and most candy bars don't make the grade when it comes to protecting your heart.

This bold statement on the health benefits of blueberries is one that has been echoed throughout the health and wellness world in recent years.

Blueberries are one of the most nutrient-dense foods in the world and contain large levels of a broad range of antioxidants. The ORAC score of blueberries is an incredible 9,621 which makes it one of the highest antioxidant foods in the world.

Consuming just one cup of blueberries provides the following nutrients:
• Resveratrol
• Gallic acid
• Lutein
• Zeaxanthin
• Vitamin K (36 percent DV)
• Vitamin C (25 percent DV)
• Manganese (25 percent DV)
• Fiber (17 percent DV)

Blueberries also:
• Combat the signs of aging
• Are a fantastic anti-inflammatory
• Boost brain health and functionality
• Support digestion
• Promote heart health
• Benefit the skin
• Aid with weight loss

If all of this doesn’t make blueberries a superfood, I’m not sure what does!!

Oats are a natural superfood because they are 100% whole grain, and contain lots of vitamins and minerals. They contain fiber and are unique in that they are one of the richest sources of rich beta-glucan, a soluble fiber that can help to lower cholesterol re-absorption.
They are also low in sodium (salt), minimally processed, and provide protein and carbohydrates for energy.

These are just some of the reasons why oats are considered one of ‘nature’s superfoods!’

Meal prepping and planning are two different tasks. Before you can prep, you need a plan. What do you want to eat for the week? How many meals do you want to prep for?

Meal prepping is the process of preparing your food for the week while planning is the process of buying the items you’ll need. Look for recipes that best fit your needs and schedule.

Their benefits range from increasing energy levels and helping the body fight disease to assist with weight loss, growth, and repair!

Although dieticians and nutritional experts have yet to release a specific definition for ‘superfoods’ (and don’t generally use the term to describe a particular food group), the term has become quite widespread in the marketing world and is popular on menus and in health food stores.

Many are actually wary of promoting the term and focus more primarily on ensuring their clients maintain a healthy balanced diet complemented with regular exercise - ‘superfoods’ are merely a single component of this. (Read more about this here: http://www.heart.org/HEARTORG/HealthyLiving/HealthyEating/HealthyDietGoals/Whats-so-super-about-superfoods_UCM_457937_Article.jsp #.WfWxmxO0MWp)

In any case, it’s definitely true that many of these ‘superfoods’ have a higher concentration of nutrients and therefore can promote a healthier lifestyle when eaten in larger quantities.

…how you achieve your healthy eating goals. The process of meal prep involves preparing ingredients and meals for the week. The purpose is to have healthy ingredients ready to make feeding yourself and your family easier.

If you have a few extra hours a day to spend preparing elaborate healthy meals, then you don’t need to meal prep. .....but, if you’re like the rest of us and would rather be spending your time elsewhere, then meal prepping is your golden ticket!
