As head athletic trainer for Carolina Core FC and an athletic trainer with Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist, Ethan begins most mornings before sunrise, preparing players for the demands of training and recovery. “We get to the performance facility around 7:30 a.m. to set up for injury follow‑ups and make sure everyone has time to complete their wellness plans,” he said. Each morning, he meets with staff to review player availability, wellness, workloads and that day’s session plan, making decisions collaboratively to support the team’s goals.

On the field, Ethan monitors athletes closely while helping execute return‑to‑sport plans. Before and after training, players cycle through optimized recovery routines, from whirlpools to red‑light therapy. Throughout the week, he uses monitoring systems such as GPS load tracking, wellness questionnaires, strength testing and thermal imaging to spot risk factors and guide informed conversations with players and coaches. “As an organization, we want to make the best decision possible for the team,” he said.

After 14 years in the profession, Ethan said his motivation has evolved. “It came down to serving an entire organization,” he said. “Being aligned with stakeholders who have the same mission and contribute to positive culture is what drives success.” The most rewarding part, he added, is being a trusted member of the performance team. “When medical insight and performance data are aligned, we’re able to make better decisions that directly impact performance on the field.”

His approach to care is simple and evidence‑driven. “Athlete care needs to be collaborative and data‑driven. I tell students and providers, ‘If you’re not testing, you’re guessing.’”

Ethan’s dedication embodies the heart of athletic training—care that extends far beyond the sidelines. Discover how Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist athletic trainers strengthen the health of our community: https://bit.ly/3Z2u0zq

Cardiac arrest doesn’t only happen in hospitals. It can happen anywhere, to anyone.

For Cindy, it happened at work in Surry County. A co-worker immediately began CPR, and Surry EMS arrived within minutes. That rapid chain of survival helped save her life.

After being stabilized, Cindy was flown to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist, where a multidisciplinary heart team guided her recovery, including the implantation of a life-saving implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD).

Today, her story is a powerful reminder of why early recognition, bystander CPR and rapid access to advanced cardiac care matter.

Michelle’s journey as a dedicated teammate at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist took on a profound and deeply personal significance when her mother, Deborah, was diagnosed with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma—a rare and aggressive form of bile duct cancer.

Recognizing the exceptional reputation of the Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Comprehensive Cancer Center and wanting only the best care for her mother, Michelle made the decision to bring Deborah from Florida, where she lives, all the way to Wake Forest Baptist. Michelle’s deep trust in the institution’s clinical expertise and compassionate approach fueled this important choice—she knew firsthand the high standard of care provided and wanted her mother to benefit from it.

From the moment of her mother’s diagnosis in 2024 at the Comprehensive Cancer Center, Michelle was intimately involved in every step of her care, witnessing firsthand the hospital’s steadfast commitment to innovation and patient-centered support.

Under the expert guidance of Dr. Caio Rocha Lima, Dr. Brian Kouri, and Dr. Perry Shen, Deborah’s treatment journey included targeted liver radiation (Y-90), immunotherapy, traditional IV chemotherapy and chemotherapy administered directly to her liver via an implanted pump. Additionally, she underwent robotic surgery to remove her gallbladder, as well as lymph node removal.

Today, Deborah’s cancer remains stable. With cholangiocarcinoma, stability can be a hard-won victory as there is no cure and treatment outcomes can be unpredictable.

Michelle’s dual perspective as both a dedicated team member and a loving daughter gives her a deepened appreciation for her colleagues whose unwavering dedication changes the lives of patients and their families. For Michelle, she credits their expertise and compassion for the reasons Deborah continues to fight and is defying the odds every single day.

Dr. Patrick Hranitzky joined Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Heart and Vascular with a passion for treating some of the most complex heart rhythm disorders and advancing how these conditions are managed.

Originally from North Texas, Dr. Hranitzky moved to North Carolina in 1999 to complete his cardiology and cardiac electrophysiology training. After fellowship training at Duke University, he joined the faculty and went on to serve as cardiac electrophysiology fellowship director, EP lab director and clinical director of electrophysiology. Throughout his career, he has worked across major health systems with a clinical focus on complex arrhythmias, ventricular arrhythmias and rhythm disorders in adults with congenital heart disease.

Much of Dr. Hranitzky’s day‑to‑day work takes place in the electrophysiology lab, where he treats patients with advanced arrhythmia procedures, trains fellows and proctors other physicians. He also sees patients in outpatient clinics in Greensboro and High Point, supporting care from initial diagnosis through treatment.

Dr. Hranitzky is especially passionate about innovation in complex arrhythmia care. His research has focused on developing and pioneering catheter ablation strategies for patients with challenging anatomy and complicated arrhythmia substrates, helping expand treatment options for patients who often have limited choices.

Looking ahead, he aims to build on Atrium Health’s strong electrophysiology foundation and broaden the scope of advanced treatments available to patients. His goal is to help position Atrium Health as a global authority and preferred training center for complex arrhythmia management while delivering care rooted in confidence, competence and empathy.

It only takes minutes to learn, but it can change a life forever.

CPR World Record Day is a statewide initiative designed to increase hands‑only CPR awareness by teaching as many people as possible in a single day.

Our teammates and community members, along with 30,000 others across the state, took time to learn hands‑only CPR, helping empower more people with the confidence to act during a cardiac emergency.

Survival from sudden cardiac arrest often depends on immediate bystander action, yet many people hesitate simply because they have never been shown what to do. You can make a difference and help save a life. ❤️

Congratulations to Julie Ann Freischlag, MD, FACS, and J. Wane Meredith, MD, FACS, for earning the university’s highest honor, presented at Thursday’s Founders Day celebration.

Cassandra’s journey highlights how heart disease can strike when you least expect it.

At 17 weeks pregnant, Cassandra experienced a rare heart attack that led to severe heart failure, turning what should have been a joyful babymoon into an unexpected fight for her life.

Through shared decision-making and extraordinary collaboration across heart care, maternal-fetal medicine, anesthesia and the NICU, the team at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist stabilized Cassandra and supported her pregnancy.

Today, Cassandra and her baby are doing well, a powerful reminder of what is possible when innovation, expertise and compassion come together at exactly the right time.

Wake Forest University students continued their longstanding tradition of giving back by presenting a check for $699,038 to the Brian Piccolo Cancer Research Fund at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Comprehensive Cancer Center.

For over 40 years, our community has united through fundraising events, raising nearly $7 million to support life-changing cancer research and patient care. This annual celebration honors the spirit of hope and progress, making a real difference for patients and families in their fight against cancer.

The fund was established in memory of former Demon Deacon and NFL football star Brian Piccolo, whose professional career was cut short at age 26 due to embryonal cell carcinoma, an aggressive form of germ cell testicular cancer. His legacy continues to inspire our commitment to advancing research and improving outcomes for those affected by cancer.

Advocate Health's strong partnerships with the military and longstanding support for its veteran teammates have benefitted the health system, the military and ultimately patients.

A new white paper, entitled “Bedside to Battlefield: Advocate Health’s National Strategy for Serving Country and Community,” details the health system’s existing work on this front.

“From my experience of growing up on military bases, I witnessed firsthand the discipline, unity and shared purpose that define our armed forces,” said Eugene A. Woods, CEO of Advocate Health, wrote in the report’s foreword. “Those experiences shaped me deeply. They instilled a lifelong respect for the sacrifices our service members make — and has fueled my personal commitment to ensuring they receive the very best care, both in uniform and as veterans.”
