18 years ago, Tamron was told she had 18 months to live. She went in for what she thought was a routine surgery—only to wake up with a diagnosis so rare, most doctors never see it in their careers.

At just 21, Tamron’s world was turned upside down when a pregnancy ultrasound revealed what was believed to be a fibroid. But after surgery, she learned she had peritoneal mesothelioma—a rare, aggressive cancer that affects only about 300 people a year in the U.S. and is even rarer in women. She was told there was no hope but refused to give up.

She sought out a second opinion, and her search for answers led her to Dr. Ed Levine at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist, a nationally recognized expert in HIPEC (hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy) surgery. Tamron says Dr. Levine’s confidence re-ignited her will to live. “He told me I was in good hands, that I’d caught the tumor early and was a good candidate for treatment. After all the doom and gloom, my fire was just a flicker. Dr. Levine was a torch. He relit my flame,” she says.

Today, Tamron is not only a survivor—she’s a passionate advocate, sharing her journey to empower others facing cancer. Her story reminds us all: never underestimate the power of perseverance, community, and compassionate care.

This Veterans Day, we honor all who served and spotlight one extraordinary story.

Meet Ron, a Vietnam Veteran and Purple Heart recipient. In 1969, Ron was piloting a helicopter when it crashed in Vietnam. Two men onboard lost their lives. Ron survived, but with devastating injuries: 60% of his body was burned and his left arm was amputated.

Throughout the following decades, Ron underwent three shoulder replacement surgeries from overuse of his right arm. In 2024, Ron needed a fourth replacement - finding a surgeon willing to operate a fourth time was a challenge until his daughter, Ronda, a nurse at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist, introduced him to Dr. Brian R. Waterman, an orthopedic surgeon and former Army surgeon.

“From the very beginning, I felt a level of comfort and confidence with Dr. Waterman,” Ron shared. “We share a brotherhood and I am very thankful for him. Dr. Waterman could relate to me and we spent time at the same Army base."

Ron has dedicated nearly 40 years to serving fellow veterans through Disabled American Veterans and was eventually elected national commander where he spoke in front of congress. Ron is a family man who continues to fly in his spare time.

We are proud to have faculty members and teammates who are not only military veterans themselves, but who also are passionate about caring for fellow veterans and their families at the VA Medical Center in Salisbury, N.C. and throughout our Wake Forest Baptist facilities.

We’re celebrating a huge milestone: 100 Focused Ultrasound treatments delivered! Each one represents a life changed for those with Parkinson’s disease and Essential Tremor, like Joe. Focused ultrasound offers a non-invasive way to reduce shaking and improve control using sound waves to target the exact area in the brain causing tremors. Treatment is often done in one session, and many patients feel relief right away.

On the same day as his procedure, Joe was celebrating his 42nd wedding anniversary with his wife. The team brought him a card, flowers and a blueberry muffin to present to her after the procedure to help them celebrate.

Additionally, the team brought him a coffee cup, knowing how excited Joe’s been to finally enjoy a hot cup again. Including coffee, he can’t wait to get back to the simple joys of fishing and working on cars with his son.

Thank you for being part of this journey with us, Joe! Here’s to the next 100 and beyond!

The J. Paul Sticht Center inpatient rehabilitation team helped Mike learn how to walk again, after he spent two months hospitalized at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center for necrotizing pancreatitis.

Recently, the Center celebrated its 40th rehab reunion. Former patients returned to embrace the care teams who helped them heal—and to share how far they’ve come.

“This reunion means so much to me,” he said. “I wanted to come back and thank those who helped me recover and launch back into the real world. They treated me and my family wonderfully and got me on a path forward and I am forever thankful.”

Day is a celebration of women in the field of radiation oncology in honor of the legacy of Marie Curie, the first woman to earn a Nobel Prize and the only person in history to have won two different science categories. Her groundbreaking research is pivotal in modern medicine, particularly in the development of radiation therapy for cancer treatment.

Our team from Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist's Comprehensive Cancer Center in Winston-Salem gathered for a photo opp to help us celebrate the significant contributions women have made in this field on the 158th anniversary of the birth of Marie Curie.

Jury was a victim of gun violence that left him paralyzed from the waist down. He credits the team at J. Paul Sticht Center for helping him adjust to his new life.

“We take so many things for granted – simple things like walking, getting out of bed, stretching – until you wake up in a hospital bed and realize you can’t do that anymore,” he said.

Recently, the Center celebrated its 40th rehab reunion. Former patients returned to embrace the care teams who helped them heal—and to share how far they’ve come.

Jury said being able to come back and see the team who helped him was incredibly fulfilling.

“It’s not an act – they genuinely care for each one of their patients,” he said. “They taught me so many things and they inspired me to be an advocate for others.”

For Jury, and so many others, this reunion wasn’t just a milestone. It was a homecoming. Read more stories of resilience, gratitude and lifelong connection: https://bit.ly/3JnfON6
