It's Wishlist Wednesday!

🧼Keeping our hands clean is one small way we care for one another at the Family House, and we go through a lot of hand soap to keep germs at bay!

It's time for us to restock our supply of liquid hand soap for our 45 guest rooms and several common areas. Can you help us get ahead this week?

✨ This wonderful group of volunteers from the Trade Marketing Department at Reynolds American collected supplies to assemble 60 generous welcome bags, and they helped with all sorts of things around the house! They even chalked the walk to give our guests an extra boost of encouragement. 💪

November is National Family Caregivers Month! 🩵

59 million caregivers of adult family members quietly do really hard jobs with a level of love and devotion that only a family member can give. Often, this means the caregiver consistently puts their own needs last.

More than 65% of our Family House guests are caregivers, and we recognize the difficulties many may face. We strive to reduce feelings of isolation through our support services and to lessen financial strains with affordable nightly rates.

Additionally, our volunteers provide extra touches of support and pockets of joy to help lift caregivers when they need it most - like visits with sweet therapy dogs, creative art and wellness projects, tasty shared meals, thoughtful welcome bags, beautiful live music, and so much more. This means, while caregivers are under our Family House roof, they are also care-receivers. 🩵

✨ It's Wishlist Wednesday, and we have a serious cereal situation on our hands. We're nearing the end of our supply and need your help to restock.

Family House guests enjoy eating a bowl of cereal any time of day or night because hunger hits when it hits. Appetites can be unpredictable due to medical treatments or stress, and pouring a bowl for a midnight snack can really feel like home.

Thank you to Brenley and Friends who volunteered at the Family House to bake brownies (and other goodies!) and create beautiful handmade cards for guests!

Brenley participated in Teens in the House last summer and left the experience inspired to stay involved. She's doing an AMAZING job by making cards from home and encouraging friends and family to make an impact for patients and caregivers at the Family House.

Thank you for making a difference! 🩵

Our Story

In 2000, Beth and Sandy Baldwin’s twenty-six year-old son, Branner, was diagnosed with melanoma. With the possibility of participating in a clinical trial, Branner’s doctor referred him to Pittsburgh, PA. For the four months while Branner was receiving treatment, he and his family made themselves at home at the Pittsburgh Family House. Already strong supporters of the local Ronald McDonald House, living the experience led Beth and Sandy to truly understand the impact of a hospital hospitality home.

After Branner passed away soon after returning to Winston-Salem, Beth and Sandy used their son’s memory to ignite a committee tasked with creating a similar home away from home in Winston-Salem. After years of hard work, collaboration with the medical centers, and support from the entire community, the SECU Family House opened its doors to guests in September 2011.

The Name “SECU”

SECU stands for State Employees’ Credit Union. This statewide credit union has adopted as one of its charitable causes the establishment of Hospital Hospitality Houses in selected communities that are home to regional medical centers. We are thankful for the $2 million challenge grant that the SECU Foundation has provided to help fund construction of SECU Family House in Winston-Salem. Among our other major donors is The Richard J. Reynolds, III and Marie M. Reynolds Foundation, which provided a $1 million lead gift.
