OUR MISSION is to support the independence of people with disabilities through consumer empowerment and community education.

We are a consumer controlled, community-based, cross disability, nonresidential private nonprofit agency that is designed and operated within a local community by individuals with disabilities and provides an array of independent living services. Advancing Your Abilities Toward Independence:

We aim to assist people with disabilities by offering an array of resources and cross-disability expertise in our service area of Forsyth, Stokes, Davie, Davidson, Surry, and Yadkin counties in NC. We want to simply encourage people to make good choices and exercise control over their own lives, to expand access to information and resources, to increase their independence, and to improve the quality of their lives. WE BELIEVE in consumer choice, consumer expertise, and community-based living. OUR JOB is to work with the consumer to identify and pursue goals that lead to greater independence. We use advocacy and public awareness to remove physical and attitudinal barriers throughout our service area. Ed Roberts was a disability rights pioneer and founder of the Independent Living Movement, which led to the creation of Centers for Independent Living across the country.

On Ed Roberts Day, we celebrate his belief that disability is a natural part of human diversity and that people with disabilities should have access to community-based, consumer-driven supports.

His legacy lives on in the work we do every day!

Get excited — our 2026 Adaptive Sports & Recreation EXPO is coming up soon! 🎉

Join us Saturday, March 28 from 10AM–2PM at JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem for a day full of adaptive sports, active living, and community connection.

This year’s EXPO will feature adaptive climbing, kayaking, yoga, hockey, basketball, fencing, and more!

We will also have vendors and a food truck on-site, so you can explore local programs, learn about resources, ask questions, and enjoy some great food!

Having a disability is a natural part of human diversity.

Yet many students, teachers, and even parents grow up without learning what disabilities are. That lack of education can sometimes lead to misunderstanding, stigma, and exclusion.

When we teach children from an early age about disabilities, inclusion, and accessibility, we’re creating a more compassionate, informed, and inclusive world for everyone.

Education is the first step to inclusion. Let’s make sure every classroom is part of the change!

At Solutions for Independence, we're committed to community outreach and would love to connect with local schools to provide education on disability awareness, accessibility, and the role of Centers for Independent Living.

We had an amazing time last Saturday at our 2025 Adaptive Recreation & Active Living EXPO! 🎉 We wanted to share a few photos with you and stay tuned because there are more to come! Everyone had a great time, and we’re so thankful for all of our vendors and volunteers who helped make this event a success and created such a wonderful experience for all who attended.
