Bird Programs Earth Touch was started in 1991 by Lea Nading, HTR.

It was a new program started with the Winston-Salem Recreation & Parks Dept. The mission was and is to make horticultural and nature programs accessible to special populations (low income, mentally, physically, and emotionally challenged, youth at risk, seniors, hospital and nursing home patients). We also help motivate people to be all they can be using plant and nature activities. Examples of activities are: nature crafts, gardening, plant giveaways, insect encounters and nature walks. When the city discontinued the program in 2011 Lea retired but has continued as a mobile program going to sites served and working out of her residence. Some of the sites being served at this time are Crystal, Sunrise and Healy Towers, Piedmont Park, Cleveland Ave Homes, Eastgate Apts.,Bethesda Center for the Homeless, City With Dwellings and Daymark Friendship Center. Volunteers and donations are needed to keep the program going. To be involved and keep us blooming contact:

Merchel Plaza looks empty without the tables and chairs. Now nobody can use it. You don’t get rid of the homeless by removing places for them to sit. You help to provide affordable housing and support City With Dwellings, Bethesda Center, Samaritan Ministries and other organizations helping the homeless.

Nature already invented the most efficient carbon-removal technology on Earth — and it grows for free.
Trees pull carbon from the air, cool neighborhoods, protect wildlife, and improve the health of our soil and water.

Every time we plant one, we’re investing in cleaner air, climate resilience, and a future where communities can thrive.

Small actions add up. Start with one tree — the planet notices

HISTORY

Earth Touch was started in 1991 by Lea Nading, HTR, a Registered Horticultural Therapist, as a new program with the Winston-Salem Rec and Parks Dept. The mission was to make horticulture and nature programs accessible to Special Population groups (low income, mentally, physically and emotionally challenged, youth at risk, seniors , hospital and nursing homes patients). Also to help people be more aware of the natural world through nature classes, crafts, gardening, plant giveaways, live insect encounters, etc.

When the city discontinued the program in 2011 Lea retired but continued to do the program herself. The name was changed at the city’s request and it became Lea’s Earth Touch Of NC. Some of the sites still being served at the present time are Crystal Towers, Sunrise Towers, Healy Towers, Piedmont Park, Cleveland Ave Homes, Holland Homes, Eastgate Apts., Bethesda Center, City With Dwellings,WS Rehab, Amos Cottage, Cardinal innovations and Daymark. We always welcome volunteers and donations to keep the program going. If you are interested in having a class at your site, being a volunteer, donating supplies or monetarily please call Lea or email her.
