This simple reminder helps bring the focus back to what is within reach: your time, your boundaries, your choices, and how you care for yourself. Letting go of what’s outside your control isn’t ignoring reality — it’s protecting your well-being.

We all know that the holidays can bring stress. So much planning and prep. Loved ones we wish were here. It's also true that the holidays can bring peace and happiness. It can bring excitement with traditions and foods. Smells that trigger memories. Decorations that make us appreciate beauty.

Both of these things can be true at the same time. You can feel happiness and peace when it comes to the holidays right along those other feelings. We're allowed to feel it all.

The holidays can be filled with conflicting emotions. It's a wonderful time of year filled with tradition and nostalgia. It can also be a sad time of year after the diagnosis of yourself or a loved one, grief over the passing of someone you wish you could be with, and more. We encourage you to give space for all of those emotions. Just because you feel sadness over something doesn't mean you can't still find joy. And just because you're finding joy in the holiday doesn't mean you're not properly grieving. You can, and should, do both.

Grief and gratitude can coexist. You can feel thankful for what remains and still hold sadness for what’s been lost.

As we move into Thanksgiving and the rest of the holiday season, remember that these emotions don’t cancel each other out—they often sit side by side.

If someone you love is hurting this week, they may not feel particularly thankful. Instead of reminding them what they “should” appreciate, consider telling them why you are grateful for them and what they mean to your life.

You never know how much those words might help.
