Are you taking Meclizine daily to avoid dizziness?  Have you been doing this for an extended period of time?  If so please keep reading.

(First thing’s first: In order to understand this research study, you will need to know that Meclizine falls under an umbrella of medications referred to as “anticholinergics.”)

A study of over 3,000 participants, set out to determine if anticholinergic use increased the risk of dementia.  The answer their research points to is: yes.

According to the study in JAMA titled “Cumulative Use of Strong Anticholinergics and Incident Dementia,” the highest increase in risk of developing dementia was seen in people who had taken this medication for over 3 years.  The study also relayed that people didn’t have to be over medicating to have this adverse effect.

Dr. Gray, the lead author of this study, told Medscape “We found an obvious dose-response relationship between anticholinergic drug use and risk of developing dementia: the higher the usage, the greater the risk.” Dr Gray continues that, “The pharmacist or doctor may not even know. Education on this issue is key, and both the public and doctors need to be encouraged to use alternative treatments where possible.”

Because this medication is so heavily utilized with those dealing with vertigo and BPPV, I found this information to be incredibly relevant.  The article encourages people to avoid use of this medication particularly when people aren’t seeing a benefit, which makes logical sense, but now there is some good evidence as to why not.

I would like to mention that the participants of this study were all over the age 65, so it is unclear if these results can be generalized to people of all ages.

As always, as a physical therapist I do not have any prescription rights, and never offer advice on starting or stopping medication.  I do, however, feel comfortable encouraging people to educate themselves, and to speak to their physicians and medical providers about what they are putting into their bodies.

“I can’t say enough good things about Cassie and Holli. I’ve worked with them for running- and workout-related injuries, and they’ve made my recovery so much easier. This has been the best physical therapy experience I’ve had by far.

They are incredibly knowledgeable and always go the extra mile to make sure you’re recovering efficiently and safely. The space itself is welcoming and well designed.
Beyond their expertise, Cassie and Holli are kind, lovely people who I’ve genuinely enjoyed getting to know. They’ve made physical therapy something I enjoy doing. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for exceptional care.”

🗣️ 1. Being treated by a vestibular specialist is likely easier, quicker, and the most direct route from spinning back to stable.
2. When someone is experiencing BPPV, their “crystals” are likely to be in 1 (or more) of 4 different canals.  If someone is doing the maneuver for the wrong canal, it is likely to cause them discomfort and dizziness, with no benefit.
3. The maneuvers to fix BPPV are simple, however they are extremely difficult to do alone while actively experiencing BPPV.

🗓️ As we enter our 4th calendar year(!), I can’t help but take a moment to appreciate the differences between the Bespoke PT that is entering 2026, and the Bespoke PT that I opened in 2023:

👉 In 2023, Bespoke PT was a portable massage table, two chairs from my dining room, and an unwavering dedication to treating every client to the absolute best of my ability.  Heading into 2026 our clinic has a top of the line 3 section electric hi-lo treatment table, a Balance Body pilates reformer, about a million gadgets and gismos, and two physical therapists with unwavering dedication to patient care.

👉 In 2023, I wasn’t sure if anyone would ever call, much less book an appointment.  As we begin 2026, Bespoke Physical Therapy has treated hundreds of people from all over Polk County, people who’ve driven from both coasts of Florida, and multiple people vacationing from other states and countries.

👉 In 2023, I treated clients for dizziness and orthopedic issues, and in 2026 (thanks to Dr. Holli!) Bespoke is also able to offer expert care for those with pelvic floor needs and endurance athletes.

🎉 So excited to continue to serve this community in 2026, and to see what the year will bring!

“Anyone who has suffered from vestibular issues knows how miserable and impactful it is, so to have someone like Cassie on your side is truly invaluable. Her bedside manner is the best I’ve ever seen in a physical therapist, her skills are top-notch, and she goes above and beyond to make the struggle of vestibular issues, whether BPPV (positional vertigo) or chronic and difficult to treat dizziness (both of which I suffer from), far more tolerable through her kindness and care. She is an exemplary physical therapist worth every penny and one whom I would not hesitate to recommend to anyone in need of top-notch vestibular care.”

Wildly grateful for these kind words!
