Hearing Loss And Cognitive Decline. Recent studies examined the association between age-related hearing loss and cognitive decline. It found that the severity of baseline hearing loss was linearly associated with incident cognitive impairment. These findings suggest that hearing loss and cognitive decline are linked but the causal relationship between them is still not fully understood. For further research, we need to better understand the causes of this condition and how it affects the brain.
The findings of this study indicate that hearing aids may help mitigate the association between hearing loss and cognitive decline. It is notable that the associations were stronger among older men than in women. In addition, the study found that men tend to be more engaged in leisure activities and have better verbal memory performance than women. Therefore, if hearing loss affects men's cognitive functioning, the findings for women are also conclusive.
