The Florida sun is finally warming up, the bees are buzzing, and its time to start thinking about what those gardens should sprout! There is no better time to get your child outside for some hands-on growth.

We have a few exciting updates for our CommunOT Garden Buds Program this spring semester! To better serve our community, we have moved our sessions to FRIDAYS and extended our time to allow for deeper exploration and more "dirt-on-hands" learning.

Double the Expertise: This semester, the garden is facilitated by our Licensed OT, Tyler, and our Education Specialist, Melissa. Together, they ensure every child is supported both developmentally and academically.

Why Garden Buds? We use the magic of gardening to build foundational skills that translate directly to home and school success:

-Focus & Patience: From seed to harvest, we practice the sequencing and "wait time" that builds strong Executive Functioning.
-The "Heavy Work" Reset: Digging and carrying soil provides the deep sensory input kids need to regulate their bodies and sharpen their focus.
-Teamwork in the Dirt: Collaborative planting projects help our "buds" practice social negotiation and problem-solving in a natural, stress-free environment.

It’s a scene that happens at kitchen tables everywhere: Your child has a story to tell that could rival Pixar, but the second the pencil hits the paper, everything stops. The avoidance kicks in - suddenly they need three snacks, a glass of water, and a ten-minute break.

Whether you're working through a homeschool lesson or tackling the afternoon homework hurdle, it’s easy to think, "Maybe they just aren't a fan of writing."

But here’s the perspective from an Occupational Therapist: It’s usually not a motivation problem. It’s a motor problem.

If handwriting isn't "automatic" yet, it takes up all of your child’s brainpower just to remember how to shape the letters. They aren't being difficult—their "brain bandwidth" is just full!

This is why Pen Pals is different. We aren't sitting at desks doing copy-work. We’re out in nature building the actual foundation for writing:

We are so excited to announce the theme for our Spring CommunOT Growth sessions: A Semester of Service & Connection.

This spring, our students won't just be practicing life skills—they’ll be using them to make a difference in Seminole County! From budgeting and shopping for families in need to volunteering at Harvest Time International, our explorers are becoming community leaders.
