🌿 Bioidentical Progesterone (Micronized Progesterone)
Structure: Chemically identical to the natural progesterone your body produces after ovulation.
Source: Usually derived from plant sources such as wild yam or soy, and then converted in a lab to match your body’s hormone exactly.
Form: Often prescribed as micronized progesterone capsules (e.g., Prometrium® or compounded versions) or topical/transdermal creams.
How it Works: Balances estrogen, supports sleep, calms the nervous system, and stabilizes mood.
Benefits:
Promotes deeper, restorative sleep
Reduces anxiety and irritability
Protects uterine lining when estrogen is used
Supports bone and heart health
May help reduce hot flashes and night sweats
Side Effects (rare): Drowsiness, mild dizziness, or bloating when taken orally — usually improved by taking it at night.
⚙️ Progestins (Synthetic Progesterone-like Drugs)
Structure: Man-made compounds designed to mimic some actions of natural progesterone, but chemically different.
Examples: Medroxyprogesterone acetate (Provera®), norethindrone, levonorgestrel (found in many birth control pills and IUDs).
How it Works: Prevents uterine overgrowth and pregnancy by binding to progesterone receptors — but with different effects on other hormone systems.
Potential Concerns:
May increase risk of blood clots and mood changes
Can worsen PMS-like symptoms or cause breast tenderness
Does not support sleep, mood, or brain health the way natural progesterone does
Some progestins may blunt estrogen’s positive cardiovascular effects
