💧 Stay hydrated - even in winter.
Cold weather can reduce thirst, but your body still loses fluids through breathing dry air, indoor heating, and illness. Dehydration in winter can lead to fatigue, headaches, dizziness, dry skin, thicker blood, and can make it harder to control blood sugar and blood pressure. Drinking enough water supports circulation, kidney function, temperature regulation, and overall health year-round.

If you’re not feeling thirsty, try sipping water throughout the day, choosing warm fluids like herbal tea, and increasing fluids when you’re sick or spending time in the cold.

🚐❄️ Important Winter Update for Our Clinchco Mobile Clinic Stop ❄️🚐

Beginning January 7th, the Health Wagon’s mobile clinic stop in Clinchco will be located inside Clinchco Town Hall, not outside.

To keep our patients and staff warm and safe during the winter months, this indoor location will remain in place for the rest of the winter until further notice.

Please come inside the Town Hall for services on the first Wednesday of every month, and as always, feel free to call us at (276) 328 - 8850 with any questions. We look forward to seeing you! 💙

❄️ Why insulin and diabetes supplies can’t freeze
Insulin is a delicate protein that can be permanently damaged when it freezes. Even if it looks normal after thawing, frozen insulin may lose its effectiveness—meaning blood sugar may not be controlled properly. Freezing can also damage glucose test strips, sensors, and insulin pens, causing inaccurate readings or device failure. In cold weather, insulin left in cars, near windows, or unheated spaces can freeze faster than people realize.

To stay safe, keep insulin and diabetes supplies stored at recommended temperatures, carry them close to your body when traveling, and never use insulin that has been frozen. If you’re unsure whether your medication or supplies were exposed to freezing temperatures, talk with your healthcare provider or pharmacist before using them.

❄️ Cold weather can increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
When temperatures drop, blood vessels narrow to conserve heat, causing blood pressure to rise and making the heart work harder. Cold weather can also make blood more likely to clot, increase inflammation, and trigger spasms in the arteries. Combined with winter illnesses and sudden physical exertion - like shoveling snow - this added strain can raise the risk of heart attack or stroke, especially for people with high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, or poor circulation.

Staying warm, avoiding sudden heavy activity, managing chronic conditions, and keeping up with routine care can help protect your heart during colder months. 💙 If you experience chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, or sudden weakness, seek medical care right away.

To schedule an appointment or see one of our providers for concerns about your heart's health, please give our team a call at (276) 328 - 8850. For emergencies, call 911.

🩸 Diabetes is a whole-body condition - not just a blood sugar issue.
When blood glucose stays high over time, it can damage blood vessels and nerves, affecting many systems throughout the body:

❤️ Heart & Circulation: Raises the risk of heart disease, stroke, and poor circulation
👁️ Eyes: Can lead to diabetic retinopathy, vision loss, or blindness
🧠 Brain: Linked to memory changes and increased risk of cognitive decline
🦶 Nerves & Feet: May cause numbness, tingling, pain, and slow-healing wounds
🦷 Oral Health: Increases the risk of gum disease, infections, dry mouth, and tooth loss
🛡️ Immune System: Makes it harder for the body to fight infections and heal properly
🩺 Kidneys: Can damage filtering systems and lead to chronic kidney disease

The good news? Diabetes complications are not inevitable.
With regular checkups, medication when needed, healthy nutrition, and glucose control, many of these risks can be reduced or prevented.

💙 If you have diabetes - or think you might - our care team is here to support your whole-body health.

📞 Call (276) 328 - 8850 today to schedule your appointment.

🩸 Diabetes Doesn’t Just Affect Blood Sugar - it impacts your entire body.
When diabetes isn’t well controlled, high blood sugar can quietly affect multiple systems, including:

❤️ Heart & Blood Vessels – Increased risk of heart disease and stroke
🦷 Oral & Dental Health – Higher chance of gum disease, infections, and tooth loss
👀 Eyes – Risk of vision changes and diabetic retinopathy
🦶 Nerves & Feet – Numbness, tingling, slow-healing wounds
🧠 Brain – Higher risk of cognitive changes over time
🛡️ Immune System – Slower healing and increased infections

The good news? Early care, routine checkups, and good glucose control make a huge difference. 💙
