In honor of Marathon Monday and the running of the 130th Boston Marathon todayššwe are throwing it back to 2019 Boston where I got to race with my mom. The atmosphere surrounding Boston on Patriotās Day is absolutely amazing. So much positive energy in one place. Hoping to return someday in a different season. But for now, I hold this quote close and share it with all of you. You donāt have to be a literal runner to embrace it. Life is full of challenges ā this is your reminder to overcome them at whatever speed and in whatever capacity you can, so long as you keep moving forward and donāt give up. Make it a great week š¤Dr. Sam

In a world that prioritizes ideal time lines, big goals and one-track minds, Iām in a different season. A slower one. An unsteady, unsure and at times out of control one. A friend shared a post about the lessons we can learn from nature and the slide about the wind resonated with me so I shared it above. A great reminder that itās okay to change your mind, to be unsure, to slow down and figure it out on your own time. I needed that this week as Iām navigating a new normal both personally and professionally, so I hope it helps one of you too. Make it a great week š¤Dr. Sam

I was told motherhood would change me. I didnāt believe it until it happened. This season Iāve been forced to slow down and for the first time Iām embracing it, not fighting it. In the chaos Iām encouraging you to carve out some time to do the same. In a world where āthe grindā is a flex, this is your reminder to embrace the season you are in, prioritize being present and to not take for granted the ordinary moments between the big moments that make up the fabric of life. Make it a great week š¤Dr. Sam

Iāve personally been working on perspective shifts during this season of life. There will always be bad days, hard days, challenges and trials. But Iāve realized if Iām moving too fast through it all to get to the next thing, that Iāll miss the little things. The things that make days better and brighter. I challenge you to slow down a little bit this week to see what you notice and to appreciate just how good your life is. Make it a great week š¤Dr. Sam

On paper there are 24 hours in a day. If Iāve been humbled by and learned anything in the last couple months itās that we donāt all have the same 24 hours. What we do have within that time is the ability to choose how we spend it and/or the attitude with which we go about it. What else Iāve learned is that the time we do have is precious so making the best choices we can at any given time, in any given season is important. Make it a great week š¤Dr. Sam

Weāre so programmed to set goals and look ahead to whatās next that we often forget to acknowledge where weāve come from. But we would never be where we are without once being where weāve been. Donāt dwell on the past, but give it the credit itās due and allow it to fuel your goals and the future. Make it a great week š¤Dr. Sam

We live in a world where āhustle cultureā is celebrated. Where we strive to constantly do more and be more- well beyond our capacity and allowing ourselves to be stretched thin and get burnt out while managing all our responsibilities and obligations. All the while posting on the socials the highlight reel and not the backstage footage. This is your reminder that it doesnāt make you ungrateful to be real and to sit with and admit to being overwhelmed. It makes you honest, authentic and relatable. You can in fact be both. Just make sure to try and focus more of your energy on gratitude for the good things in your life, no matter how small. Make it a great week š¤Dr. Sam

When we lose something it often feels like failure. However, loss can actually be very positive. When we lose baggage or bad habits, we make room for better. I donāt know about you but every time Iām in the process of making a big, positive change I often feel like I am losing parts of what Iāve known/what is comfortable. Next time you feel like loss ia a failure, I encourage you to take a look at how youāre growing in that moment and see if the loss truly is just evolution. Make it a great week! š¤Dr. Sam

Itās true- most of us do not love the struggle and would avoid it if we could. The struggle is uncomfortable and challenging. It pushes us out of our comfort zone time and time again. But what we need to understand is that the struggle is where the magic happens. The struggle is what reveals what we are capable of and our true character. Where is an area of your life youāre currently struggling? When you take a step back, see if you can identify some positives that are coming from the struggle. Make it a great week! š¤Dr. Sam

Who we spend our time with matters. We absorb energy and take on character traits of those we spend the most time with. I encourage you to take a look at your circle. Are those youāre spending your time with adding to your life or sucking the energy out of you? You donāt have to cut all ties, but being more aware of the kinds of people your spend your time with is important. See what you can do to level up your circles and surround yourself with winnersā see what happens, I think youāll like the result. Make it a great week! š¤Dr. Sam
I know that when I don't feel in control my default setting is to worry. I know for a fact worrying has never added anything positive to myself. This is a reminder I needed to hear and thought some of you might too. No sense in worrying about the things you can't control-- this simply takes away the joy of today and tomorrow. Make it a great week! š¤ Dr. Sam

š„³Happy Birthday Element š„³
My first baby turns 7 today! On February 4, 2019 I opened the doors to Element Chiropractic & Wellness. A humble beginning, sharing a treatment room with my friends/colleaguesāa massage therapist, a facial stretch therapist, and a physical therapy team is how it all started. It wasnāt always easy, but we made it work. All I had was a fold up table and my two hands at the start. I always take a look back this week at my first week of patientsā I had four in total and Iām forever grateful for those who walked through my doors and trusted me with their care from day one. The past seven years have been a wild ride- lots of changes, growth, learning and evolution of my practice: time away for an unexpected broken wrist and surgery, making a tough decision to go out of network with insurance (best decision Iāve made so I can treat my patients with the time and attention they deserve), building an extensive network of practitioners to work with and expanding my knowledge into the womenās health space spanning from pre-conception, pregnancy and postpartum through menopause and beyond.
And now more evolution as I navigate what Element looks like in this new chapter of life as I dive into motherhood and my family is expanding, all while owning a business and taking care of others. I donāt have everything figured out (yet), but Iām working on coming up with a new work/life harmony.
When I opened Element back on that cold February day, I had no idea what all was in store for me and didnāt realize just how much I would learn and be impacted by the patients I have the privilege of serving every day. My patients have become friends and family, and in this season of life, I am beyond grateful to have so much love and support. So for all of you who have trusted me with your care and the care of your loved ones over these past seven years, I say āthank youā, though that will never be enough to express the gratitude I have for those of you who have built this dream with me. Cheers to seven years of Elementā itās been a blast getting to today and Iām excited to see what these next years have in store. Stay tuned!

It is often said that chiropractic finds you, you do not find it. As I reflect on how life has played out over the last 5 years, Iāve found that to become true. My life as an avid runner is what led me to discover chiropractic in the first place. My biggest role model in my life is my mom, a bad a** runner who inspired me to follow in her footsteps (pun intended). After my own struggles with weight, I took to running and havenāt looked back. In 2010 I ran my first marathon with my mom by my side the entire time, earning myself a Boston Qualifier. Despite getting into Boston for 2011, I was injury plagued following the marathon. An IT band injury kept me sidelined until I could rehab enough to get back to running. In 2012 I was able to run my second full marathon and in 2013 my third. After my 2013 marathon, my IT band injury returned. I took some time away from running while I finished up my undergrad career at the University of Michigan. During this time I adopted various cross-training activities to maintain my fitness level and also spent a great deal of time in physical therapy and doing rehabilitation on my own. Nothing was quite getting me back to running pain free.
Upon graduation in May 2014 with a Movement Science degree, I was back to running some but continued to be plagued by injury. I moved home with my parents and was working as a secretary in the construction field while trying to figure out what my next steps were. Not being able to run as far or as fast as I wanted to was growing old. Finally, my dad suggested I go see his chiropractor. It was my last resort, as Iād tried just about everything to relieve the pain and get back to running like I knew I could. I remember calling to make an appointment and being told the doctor has a 6-week waiting list- the 22 year old version of myself was annoyed and couldnāt comprehend a 6-week wait (we Millenials are truly all about instant gratification and this situation was no exception). I remember getting a call from the office while at work one afternoon in August of 2014 asking me if Iād like to move my appointment up earlier as there had been a cancellation; I jumped at the opportunity and headed off to the chiropractor. I remember my first visit like it was yesterday.
I sat in the doctorās office and she listened to my story, acknowledged my frustration with not being able to do what I loved. She took the time to examine and assess me, acknowledging how interconnected the body is and helped me understand how each of my symptoms related to each other and to the underlying dysfunction I was experiencing. After an explanation of what she had found and an explanation of how she could help, she began to treat. My initial treatment included what I now understand as dry needling, Active Release and an adjustment. I remember rolling over for a side-posture adjustment and looking up at her diploma that read āDoctor of Chiropractic.ā In that moment, as the adjustment was delivered I decided to myself that I was going to be a chiropractor.
Lots happened between November 2014 and August 2015 as I preparred to move to St. Louis and start school. I drove myself down to school on August 28, 2015 and stepped out of my car into 100 degree weather with 90% humidity at 9 oāclock at night at an apartment I rented sight unseen and thought to myself āwhat did I do?ā I spent time exploring the area and running at the parks nearby until school started on September 8, 2015. After that White Coat Ceremony, the next 3.5 years seemed to fly by. I spent countless hours studying and got involved in as many extracurricular activities as I could. I continued running and working out, made some incredible life-long friends, gained new mentors, traveled all over the US for seminars and fell more in love with chiropractic each and every day. I can honestly say there was not one morning that I woke up and did not want to go to school- that is something I realize is special and I will always cherish. The journey came full circle on December 22, 2018. I graduated magna cm laude with my Doctor or Chiropractic and summa cm laude with my Masters in Sport Science & Rehabilitation. Walking on graduation day was the culmination of years of hardwork, but also the start of a new journey that will require dedication, patience and sacrifice.
The journey was tough- lots of good days and bad, but Iām thankful to have been surrounded by such inspiring and supportive people to help me through. About half way through the journey I decided that upon graduation I would start my own practice. The challenge of doing so excited me and kept me going each and every day. I am grateful to all of those who have been part of the journey and am thankful to have so many mentors in the healing arts and in business who have helped me and continue to help me turn my dreams into reality. I now understand that there is a reason for everything in life and I would not change one thing as they have all led me to where I am right now. I am so lucky that chiropractic chose me and am excited to serve in the best profession in the world for the rest of my life. After a long and winding journey, with a dream and the support of many, Element Chiropractic & Wellness is excited to serve you!
