This client recently had functional lab work with me. She had labs done in the fall with her primary care, and was told she needs to go back on Lipitor. No other recommendations or analysis of the labs was made.
Here is where I get fired up:
1. The labs she had done in the fall were the “normal yearly labs” The standard tests that are ordered and covered by insurance are a joke. They only tell part of the story. The ranges are so broad you have to be pretty darn sick for them to be out of range. They look at your cholesterol and tell you to go on statins and see you in a year. What a waste of time.
2. This client is in her early 30’s. She is a momma. She has her whole life ahead of her. She has been told for years that her cholesterol is high and to take a statin. But nobody has ever dug deeper to look at the big picture. Left unchecked these patterns will most likely turn into chronic disease down the road.
3. If your doctor isn’t asking about bowel movements, digestion, diet, exercise, sleep, and stress patterns, and their only advice is “here take this drug” you don’t have a doctor, you have a drug dealer. And guess what, that drug isn’t healing or curing a darn thing. It’s a bandaid that makes the medical complex a bunch of money.
Back to these labs. We ran a comprehensive wellness panel, enough data points to get the whole picture. And then I analyzed them from a functional perspective to help understand what is going on inside her body and how she can take control of her health. This is what I found:
*Iron dysfunction. I don’t think she is iron deficient. I think she isn’t using her iron properly, most likely due to a need for copper.
*Methylation issues leading to systemic inflammation.
*An under functioning thyroid that has the very beginning of auto antibodies forming
*A high hematocrit and RBC. Which elevates her cardiovascular risk. These were high in the fall too but she was told it was from dehydration. Nobody asked her about her water intake, which is more than adequate, it’s not dehydration.
*Beginning markers of NAFLD.
*Her lipid profile combined with inflammation and high RBC and platelets do paint a cardiovascular risk. But why?? Statins won’t address the root, they will be masking it. Addressing methylation, inflammation, and having her doctor run further testing for the increased red cell counts, combined with diet and lifestyles changes will help her heal.
I share this all with you because I am so passionate about labs. I’m frustrated with the amount of people who have early warning signs if you just dig a little deeper. How many people could we prevent from developing chronic diseases if we really took the time to see the whole picture and then give them actually tools to change their path??
This client now has a diet, lifestyle, exercise, and supplement plan to help get her body on the right path so she can have a long, healthy life with her family ❤️
