“I am not someone who is easily impressed, but Dr. Nick and the team at the Neurologic Wellness Institute exceeded my hopes in every way. I am genuinely impressed and deeply grateful.

I had been struggling with chronic migraines (over 350 in the last 3.5 years) while also treating chronic Lyme disease with a specialist for the past year. Although some Lyme symptoms were improving, the migraines continued and severely impacted my ability to work/ parent/ and function day-to-day. My quality of life had steadily declined, and I reached a point where I felt exhausted, discouraged, and hopeless. When I first heard about Dr. Nick’s clinic, I was curious, but too burnt out to feel optimistic. Still, the moment I walked through the door, I felt a sense of calm and knew I was in good hands.

And, the results speak for themselves. In the past four weeks, I have had one manageable migraine—something I truly never imagined was possible. That shift alone has been life changing. I also feel more fortified, less fatigued, have far less brain fog and feel like I can function as I used to when I was feeling well.

The clinic itself is clean, well lit, and thoughtfully run. The staff is professional, warm, and highly competent. Chris at the front desk is not only friendly but genuinely kind and supportive; an essential quality when working with patients navigating neurological and autonomic challenges. Dr. Nick is a true gem. He is professional, compassionate, and an exceptional listener. I never felt rushed or dismissed. Instead, I felt heard, respected, and partnered with throughout my care. His insight, care, and expertise are remarkable, and his program is absolutely worth the significant investment of time, energy, and money.

I cannot recommend Dr. Nick and his team highly enough. Finding this clinic gave me something I had nearly lost... real hope. I am profoundly grateful to be functioning again, feeling better, and finally able to enjoy my life. 🙏”

PPPD: The dizziness that doesn’t show up on MRI

If you feel off-balance every day…
If grocery stores feel overwhelming…
If scrolling on your phone makes you feel worse…
If doctors keep saying “everything looks normal”…

You might be dealing with Persistent Postural-Perceptual Dizziness (PPPD).

Here’s what that means 👇

PPPD is a chronic dizziness condition where the brain becomes overly sensitive to movement, posture, and visual stimulation.

It often starts after:
• A vestibular infection
• A concussion
• A panic attack
• A period of intense stress
• Vestibular migraine

Even when the original issue improves, the brain can stay in threat mode.

Instead of smoothly blending balance, vision, and body awareness…
It becomes hyper-alert and overcorrects.

Common symptoms:
• Constant rocking or swaying
• Feeling “off” or disconnected
• Worse in busy environments
• Worse when standing upright
• Worse when stressed or tired

And it lasts for 3+ months.

Important:
This is not “just anxiety.”
This is not imaginary.

It’s a brain network problem.
And brain networks can change.

Treatment may include:
• Vestibular rehab
• Gradual movement exposure
• Visual-motion training
• Nervous system regulation
• Sometimes medication

The goal isn’t to suppress your brain.
It’s to retrain it.

If this sounds like you, you’re not crazy.
Your brain may just be stuck in protection mode.

And protection mode can be rewired. 🧠

Brock Beads are a simple but powerful tool used in vision and neurological rehab to improve eye coordination and convergence ability.

When someone has difficulty converging their eyes (either convergence insufficiency or convergence excess), the brain may struggle to merge the two images from each eye into one clear image. This can lead to diplopia (double vision), eye strain, headaches, and difficulty focusing.

🔹 Focusing on a closer bead → creating convergence (eyes coming together)
🔹 Shifting to the far bead → creating divergence (eyes coming apart)

This type of training helps retrain binocular vision, improve eye teaming, and support patients with:
• Double vision
• Post-concussion visual symptoms
• Eye strain
• Headaches
• Difficulty focusing

When the eyes don’t work together, the brain has to work harder.

Brock Beads training is not for everyone. A comprehensive neurological exam can help determine if this is a beneficial tool or if it may be counter productive for you.

Dr. Nick talks about the role of the brain-gut-microbiome axis in depression. Depression has classically been thought of as a disorder of neurotransmitters (signals in the brain); however, over the last decade, more research has shown that inflammation and metabolic problems can cause depression. The gut contains a microbiome full of bacteria and viruses that help our internal ecosystem function properly. When the microbiome becomes affected by poor diet, stress, infections, and antibiotics, it can cause dysregulation or dysbiosis. Gut dysbiosis can affect the brain and its signaling via the gut-brain axis leading to depression symptoms. For this reason, there are many other therapies that can be used to prevent and treat depression.

Using Eye Movements as Brain Biomarkers 🧠👀

Video Nystagmography (VNG) is a test used to evaluate how different areas of the brain and brainstem are functioning — by measuring eye movements.

Why eye movements?
Because they are controlled by multiple regions of the brain, not just one.

Key concepts:
• Different eye movements are driven by different brain regions
• Normal eye movements suggest efficient neurologic function
• Abnormal patterns may indicate reduced efficiency in specific pathways

VNG results are never viewed in isolation. They are compared with a patient’s symptoms, physical exam, and other diagnostic findings to help create a clear, individualized treatment plan.

The eyes provide objective data about how the brain is functioning.

Can you train your brain in the gym?

Your muscles don’t move first.
Your brain does.

On this episode of the Neurologic Wellness Podcast, Dr. David Traster sits down with movement specialist Aaron Delgrolice, founder of Hybrid Fitness Training, to break down why the future of fitness is neurological.

Aaron explains why:
🧠 The nervous system fires before tissues
👁 Vision impacts strength and mobility
⚖️ Vestibular function affects balance and pain
💨 Breathing regulates threat signals
🔁 Assessment + retesting changes everything

His top-down approach integrates:
• Visual drills
• Vestibular stimulation
• Proprioceptive training
• Cerebellar activation
• Calisthenics + kettlebells
• Isometrics + plyometrics
• Breathwork for parasympathetic regulation

The nervous system does NOT distinguish between physical, emotional, or psychological stress. Trauma, poor sleep, and emotional strain can all show up as tightness, pain, or weakness.

When you train the brain first — movement changes.
Pain changes.
Your relationship with exercise changes.

This is not “just a workout.”
This is brain-based performance and recovery.

Migraine Support Strategy: Cold Pressor Therapy 🧠❄️

This technique, often referred to as a “cold pressor,” is used as a non-pharmacologic approach to help decrease the severity and duration of migraines.

How it’s performed:
• Fill a tub deep enough to fully submerge one hand
• Add two trays of ice
• Alternate hands every 30 seconds
• Continue for a total of 5 minutes
• Rewarm hands afterward with a hot pack

The physiology:
Cold exposure causes blood vessels in the hands to constrict. This vasoconstriction may help redirect blood flow centrally, which can assist in calming vascular changes associated with migraines.

After the cold exposure, reheating the hands promotes healthy circulation.

Cold pressor therapy is one example of how targeted physiologic strategies may support migraine management.

Meet Lisa, who was diagnosed with a Functional Neurological Disorder. Before starting care, Lisa was experiencing speech difficulty and gait instability. For the first five months of her neurological condition, she relied on a walker and could only speak a few words at a time.

At her first session at the Neurologic Wellness Institute, she was still struggling with stuttering and word production. During that visit, after a targeted intervention, she was able to clearly say:

“Sally sold seashells by the seashore.”

Lisa describes the team as professional, attentive, and thorough. She shares that the staff went above and beyond and made her feel confident in her care plan.

If you or someone you know is dealing with:
• Speech challenges
• Gait or balance concerns
• Post-concussion symptoms
• Other neurological conditions

A comprehensive neurologic evaluation may help identify the root cause.

Struggling with neck pain, headaches, or dizziness after whiplash? 👀🧠

This advanced virtual reality eye-head coordination training helps retrain how your brain and neck communicate.

In this exercise, the VR system tracks how the head moves through space while the patient follows a moving planet using controlled head and neck motion. 🌍 If tracking shifts off target, real-time feedback instantly alerts the patient — helping improve precision, stability, and motor control.

This type of neurological rehab may benefit:
• Whiplash injuries
• Cervicogenic dizziness
• Chronic neck pain
• Headaches
• Post-concussion symptoms

When the neck and brain aren’t communicating properly, symptoms can persist. Targeted eye-head coordination therapy helps restore that connection.

“I was referred to NWI by my chiropractor when I started experiencing a migraine that was different from the rest that started in my neck and tore through the back of my head up and over behind my eyes. Having a history of concussions and chronic migraines, I tried all my “tricks”, methods and meds and NOTHING worked. By the time I went to NWI, I had had this migraine pain for over 45 days and I was slowly losing my ability to function. I was very apprehensive and not hopeful that this place would work especially after having years of Drs., Neurologist and Chiropractors telling me they don’t know what’s wrong and to try new meds. I took a chance in pure desperation for some relief and I am so very glad I did. I was met with compassion and hope that healed a lot of the trauma from other experiences that often left me feeling awful. Dr. Proce took time to understand my case, patiently endured all my skeptical questions, didn’t give up when certain methods did not work and encouraged me that he will figure it out. To anyone on the fence, just do it. Their entire approach looks at the bigger picture and the methods to help actually worked. They didnt just fix a symptom but helped figure out the stem of the problem. I cannot recommend NWI enough! Thank you for helping me feel better and give me hope that life without migraines is possible!”

We are honored to play a role in all of our patients’ healing journeys.

Depression isn’t just a chemical imbalance.
For some individuals, brain inflammation may be a driving factor.

Research suggests that neuroinflammation can play a role in major depressive disorder — which is why anti-inflammatory strategies may support treatment.

One evidence-based tool? Omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil.

Omega-3s:
• Are critical structural fats in the brain
• Help regulate inflammation
• Support cellular membrane health
• May reduce depressive symptoms in some individuals

Studies show omega-3 supplementation may benefit people with major depressive disorder — and even individuals experiencing milder depressive symptoms.

But quality matters.

Many fish oil supplements are oxidized or rancid, which reduces effectiveness and may increase inflammation. When choosing a supplement:
✔️ Select a high-quality, reputable brand
✔️ Check expiration dates
✔️ Look for antioxidant protection to prevent oxidation

Important: Depression is complex and multifactorial. Proper treatment may include therapy, medication, lifestyle changes, and nutrition.

Omega-3s are not a replacement — they are a potential supportive strategy.

Dr. Nick talks about the benefits of probiotic supplementation after traumatic brain injury (TBI). The gut-brain axis is important in maintaining proper functioning in both the brain and gut, but the gut microbiome is also essential. The gut microbiome is a large and diverse collection of bacteria and viruses that help support our immune system, digestion, and brain function. After a TBI, disruptions in the blood brain barrier and gut-brain axis can cause dysregulation of the gut microbiome resulting in dysbiosis. Dysbiosis can promote neuroinflammation, intestinal permeability or “leaky gut,” and mood and cognitive impairments. In order to prevent long-term complications following a concussion, proper probiotic supplementation may be beneficial.

👉Check out the video on our YouTube channel under “Education” for more in depth information on the benefits of probiotics following brain injury!
