San Geronimo Valley Emergency Readiness Group

San Geronimo Valley Emergency Readiness Group VERG is a volunteer disaster preparedness group for the communities of Lagunitas, Forest Knolls, San Geronimo, and Woodacre. Why Organize?

Visit our website to learn how we organize the Community and support neighbors helping neighbors. In the event of a major disaster, such as an earthquake, Marin’s first responders will likely be overwhelmed. VERG is working to have every neighborhood ready to care for residents who live within its borders until first responders arrive, which could take up to several days. VERG helps the community by:
• Organizing Neighborhood Networks
• Maintaining a robust radio network.
• Supporting Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT) and other vital teams.
• Holding classes so residents know how to prepare and mitigate fire risk.
• Teaching residents about Home Hardening and Defensible space to mitigate risk and reduce vulnerability.
• Arranging support for Vulnerable residents

Are you interested in having a professionally trained expert look at your property and provide recommendations for fire risk mitigation? Then you're in luck, because Defensible Space inspectors are in the Valley.

Uniformed Inspectors will conduct defensible space and home hardening evaluations on residential properties in the Valley starting the week of August 23. Inspections are being conducted by the Marin County Fire Department in partnership with neighboring fire agencies and the Marin Wildfire Prevention Authority (MWPA).

A comprehensive report for your property will be available to you online 24 hours after your property’s evaluation. The report will provide steps to reduce your property’s vulnerability and improve your safety from wildfires.

We encourage residents to accompany the inspectors for a socially distanced tour of their property to find areas that could be improved for defensible space and home-hardening.

If nobody is home, that’s OK! Inspectors will evaluate the property from the road/driveway and leave instructions to retrieve your online report.

Please contact dspace@marinwildfire.org or (415) 275-1185 with any questions.

VERG Neighborhood Leaders Bob and Avis Licht knew their neighbors were concerned about neighborhood fire hazards, and everyone agreed that private property and common areas needed cleanup. Inspired by their involvement in Firewise, they took the initiative to coordinate the cleanup of vegetation and clearing overhanging tree limbs. Knowing that it was more efficient to do all the work at once instead of neighbors working individually, they organized a crew to do the entire area in a day....
