Disability rights and racial justice are deeply connected.

Black people with disabilities experience higher rates of discrimination in education, health care, housing, and the criminal justice system. These barriers don’t exist in isolation. They are shaped by history, policy, and long-standing inequities.

Disability Rights Florida wrote an article about 17 Black disability advocates who shaped the fight for disability rights. Read full article to learn how these leaders paved the way for change.

ScribbleCon26 will be held on Saturday, February 21, 2026, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. It is a FREE event!

Do you like grabbing your pencil and scribbling your way to another dimension where anything is possible? Well, we have a day for you!

ScribbleCon26 is a writing workshop that welcomes students of all levels [middle school and above] and anyone [parents and guardians] who love to write. It is a creative, hands-on experience led by writing professionals. Come and write alongside professional writers, authors, poets, and teachers. Students will engage in the writing process by selecting topics, drafting, revising, and editing their original work.

Parents are encouraged to come and write alongside their child!

Just write and you will be right!

Black History is American History. This month—and every day—we honor the Black disability advocates whose leadership has strengthened both civil rights and disability rights.

As the lead plaintiff in the landmark Olmstead v. L.C. Supreme Court case, Lois Curtis helped secure a fundamental civil right for people with disabilities to live in their own communities rather than in institutions.

This week's Bill of the Week features House Bill 37! This bill would continue provisions set to expire in 2026 that allow for the disregard of some SSDI income when deciding who qualifies for DD waivers.

This means more Virginians would remain eligible for DD waivers while providing greater flexibility to work.
