Recovery has its challenges. Many who recover from addiction are abandoned because their entire identity necessarily changed for the better. An unintended consequence of this fundamental shift in personality - the recovery of the True Self - underlies many heartbreaks.

In my book, a live loved one is preferable to a dead drinking buddy. Unfortunately many fail to see it that way.

In other words, if you're going to ask a loved one to get sober, maybe be on board with the idea that if they succeed, some adaptation will likely be required on your end, or that relationship may go the way of the dinosaur as the recovering person's self-respect and self-love returns.
