๐ A Celebration of Renewal, Legacy, and Community at The Center! ๐กโ๏ธ
Last weekend, The Center hosted a Block Party & Ribbon Cutting Ceremony to celebrate the 3 newly renovated homes in Woodbury, marking another milestone in our journey toward excellence, inclusion and innovation.
In his remarks, Executive Director Jay Silverstein, Ph.D. reflected on our rich history โ from our beginnings in 1958 as The Nassau Center, to a farmhouse in Levittown and finally to our Woodbury Campus in 1962. These three houses, established in the 1980s as our first community residences, tell the story of The Centerโs growth and enduring mission.
โจ Home 86 โ dedicated to Betty & Dr. Irving Rockoff, whose son Ezra still calls this house home. Gratitude to the Cerrone family for their continued generosity.
โจ Home 88 โ dedicated to Jack & Leona Brover, one of our founding families. We were honored to welcome their children Barry and Joan.
โจ Home 90 โ dedicated to Jerry Gordon, whose mother Hannah was a devoted benefactor and sister Eleanor a valued board member.
Jay thanked Walter Stockton, President & CEO of Kinexion, and our Kinexion Board Members for their leadership and partnership that made these renovations possible.
Special thanks to contractors SGLI and All Boro for their excellence (and for bringing delicious food and live music!) and to our Development Team, Rick, Brendan, Frank, Fran and James, for ensuring every detail reflected The Centerโs high standards.
We also extend appreciation to Jennifer Gallub-Pravato, representing Joseph Saladino, Supervisor of the Town of Oyster Bay, and Cindy Rogers, representing Congressman Tom Suozzi, for joining in celebration.
Guests enjoyed the unveiling of our beautiful Serenity Trail and the addition of a train generously donated by the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 14-14B โ a true highlight of the day! ๐
To close the celebration, Terrence (38 years with The Center) and Howard (23 years) helped cut the ribbon, marking not just the opening of newly renovated homes, but the continuation of a legacy built on compassion, community and care. โค๏ธ

The Center boasts a rich tradition of over 60 years supporting developmentally disabled children, adults, their families and the community. Government and societal changes present numerous challenges to organizations like ours and compel us to rethink historical models of operation. The Center ushers in an exciting new era focused upon meeting these challenges through excellence, innovation and a renewed dedication to our core mission. Our success integrating historical wisdom and seasoned staff with an infusion of new ideas and personnel uniquely positions the Center to lead the industry through an evolving landscape.
Fiscal stability has enabled the Center to develop three state of the art day programs and commence major upgrades to our residential and school facilities. We are planning two new group homes for students aging out of our childrenโs residence and an expansion of our vocational and pre-vocational opportunities for children and adults. Strategic program development paired with efficient utilization of resources has resulted in enhanced services to individuals and improved employee compensation packages.
We recently launched our Support with Dignity initiative to enhance opportunities for individuals to live with greater independence within their communities. This initiative embraces three pillars: Respectful Interactions; Promoting Independence; and, fostering Purposeful, Person-Centered Activities. Through a collective commitment to best practices in the field, the Center will advance the hopes and dreams of the individuals we serve.
I welcome you on this journey with us, so please consider becoming a part of the Centerโs future.
