Aug. 26, 1980. It was 44 yrs ago my dad suffered a cardiac arrest while jogging near our home (in the country). He would have been 97. My brother Sam was with him when he suddenly collapsed. Our neighbor down the street called 9-1-1 and I raced to the scene where he collapsed and began CPR. It took about 18-20 minutes for the first responders to arrive. As I continued CPR, the paramedics took over and transported him to the hospital. He never regained consciousness and we lost him at age 53. Too young. I had my first cardiac arrest at age 49. Genetics in my opinion was the culprit. I was fortunate to have several bystanders around when i went down with cardiac arrest in 2007. With my dad's story in the back of my mind all the time, I am fortunate and thankful I survived. My dad may have benefited from an AED, but we will never know. Be prepared to respond to cardiac arrest and know how to use an AED if it is available. You could save a life!
