What is Imbolc?

Imbolc (pronounced IM-bolk or IM-bolc) is an ancient Celtic seasonal festival marking the halfway point between the Winter Solstice (Yule) and the Spring Equinox (Ostara).

It’s traditionally celebrated around February 1st–2nd, when winter is still present, but the earliest signs of spring are beginning to stir beneath the soil.

The meaning of the name “Imbolc”

The word Imbolc is Old Irish, and it is most often connected to meanings like:

“in the belly” (referring to pregnancy, new life forming)

or linked to milk / lactation, because this is when ewes begin producing milk as lambing season approaches

So even in the cold, the land is quietly preparing life.

📣 Important ParaCon Update

Tomorrow kicks off Hanover Tavern ParaCon, and we are excited to welcome everyone for an incredible two-day event.

Due to ongoing icy conditions around the Hanover County Complex - including walkways leading to the Jail, Courthouse, Clerk of Courts, and Library - we have made the decision to postpone Saturday evening’s paranormal investigation. The safety of our guests, speakers, and volunteers is always our top priority.

🔁 The investigation has been rescheduled for March 7th.
All guests who purchased investigation tickets have been contacted directly with details.

✨ The convention itself is STILL ON.
The walkways and paths around Hanover Tavern, along with our primary and overflow parking areas, are fully clear and safe. We are ready to have an amazing weekend filled with speakers, history, conversation, and community.
