Heart disease causes one in four deaths, making it the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States. Fortunately, nearly 80% of cardiac events can be prevented.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly half of adults in the U.S. have high blood pressure and only about a quarter of people with high blood pressure have it under control. Statistics also show that certain racial and ethnic groups are disproportionately affected by this condition and are less likely to have their blood pressure under control.

Whether you're healthy or have a more symptomatic picture, your heart health is important! Implementing preventive measures can reduce the likelihood of devastating cardiac events. Contact our office today if you'd like to have heart health focused care. We look forward to hearing from you!

We are about one month away from when school starts and have some tips that will get preparation on it's way...

Ease Back Into Sleep
Make the transition back to school at a time when kids tend to be energized and nervous, going back rested is really critical for function across all domains. Start gradually easing into an earlier bed time and an earlier wake-up time—even just 5 to 10 minutes earlier each night—a few weeks before school starts to have kids rested and ready to go on the first school morning. Cutting out sugar- and caffeine-laden snacks prior to bedtime can also help, as well as limiting late-afternoon naps.

Good Fuel for a Healthy Body
A healthy breakfast is an important start to a day of learning. Keep quick, healthy options on hand—whole-foods, yogurt, cottage cheese, fresh fruit etc. to ensure breakfast time goes smoothly. And don't forget lunch—easy-to-carry veggies, fruits, dairy products, lean meats, and wholesome snacks will help keep the energy, and attention, high through the afternoon.

Special Health Concerns
If your child has any special health concerns or needs, make sure to bring your child in to see their doctor to update any recommendations.

Weigh the Backpack
Experts recommend that a child's backpack weigh no more than 10 to 15 percent of his body weight, to reduce the chance of back pain or injury. Kids' backpacks can cause back, shoulder and neck pain when they're too heavy and worn for numerous hours throughout the day.

"Skin-flammation" — it's a thing. Common inflammatory skin conditions including acne, sun damage, and eczema (dermatitis). And while there’s no magic food or diet, modifying our lifestyle to include plenty of anti-inflammatory foods can help keep symptoms at bay.
