This November, we highlight Lung Cancer Awareness Month by encouraging early detection, screening, and education. Learn the signs, understand your risk, and talk with your provider about whether a lung cancer screening is right for you.

Who Should Consider Screening?

Lung cancer screening with low-dose CT (LDCT) is recommended for adults who:
• Are 50–80 years old
• Have a 20-pack-year smoking history
• Currently smoke or quit within the last 15 years

Early detection saves lives.

Celebrating Medical Assistant Week at Golden State Cancer Center!

This week, we’re proud to recognize the incredible dedication of our Medical Assistants — the heart of our patient care team.

Dianne Gutierrez, our Lead MA, has been part of Golden State Cancer Center for 13 years. Dianne has always known she wanted to work in healthcare — even since second grade! She’s passionate about oncology and finds meaning in helping patients navigate one of the most difficult times in their lives. “I get to make a difference in my patients’ lives and help them understand what they are going through. It’s scary hearing the ‘C’ word,” she shares.

Karen Penner, MA and Insurance Specialist, brings over 31 years of experience in medicine — from Pediatrics to Orthopedics to Internal Medicine. Karen has been with GSCC for 7 years and continues to find joy in advocating for patients every day. “Every patient is someone’s loved one and should be treated as such,” she says.

Both Dianne and Karen remind us how vital compassion and expertise are in delivering exceptional care.

Thank you to our MAs for all you do — your hard work, empathy, and dedication truly make a difference!

Today is National Mammography Day — a powerful reminder that early detection saves lives.

Mammograms remain one of the most effective tools for detecting breast cancer early, when it’s most treatable. If you’re due for your annual screening or haven’t scheduled one yet, now is the perfect time to make it a priority.

Early detection is one of the most effective ways to fight breast cancer. Regular screenings can find cancer before symptoms appear—when it’s most treatable.

Here are a few general screening guidelines to keep in mind:

- Talk with your healthcare provider about when to begin screening based on your personal and family history.
- Most women begin annual mammograms around age 40.
- Women at higher risk—such as those with a family history or dense breast tissue—may need to start earlier or add other imaging tests.
- Continue regular screenings as long as you’re in good health.

Knowledge, awareness, and early detection can make all the difference. If you’re due for your screening, now is the perfect time to schedule it.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Did you know that 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime?

This month, we’ll be focusing on raising awareness and highlighting the importance of early detection, education, and empowerment in the fight against breast cancer.

While many early-stage breast cancers are found during routine mammograms, it’s important to talk with your healthcare provider if you notice:

• New lumps or thickening in the breast or underarm
• Swelling in part or all of a breast
• Changes in breast skin texture (dimples or puckering)
• Breast or ni**le pain
• Ni**le changes, such as inversion or discharge
• Redness or scaling on the breast or ni**le
• Unusual asymmetry or changes in breast shape or size

Together, through awareness and proactive care, we can make a difference.
