How to choose the best toothpaste

Choosing a toothpaste is a personal matter. Not only does each person have different preferences when it comes to flavor, texture, and ingredients, but you might also have different needs than other people in your family, meaning there is no single best option for everyone.

What is important is to make sure the toothpaste you use is effective, and this usually means using a fluoride toothpaste.

Fluoride is a mineral that protects the enamel on your teeth—that's the outermost layer that covers everything else inside. Without your enamel, your teeth would be really sensitive and yellow. The vast majority of dentists, along with the American Dental Association (ADA), recommend that you use a toothpaste that contains fluoride.

A fluoride concentration of at least 1,000 ppm will give the best protection. There are times when fluoride might not be recommended for you, so There are some fluoride-free toothpastes.
There are other ingredients that are helpful for particular needs, for example, remineralizing sensitive teeth or repairing damage to gums.

Toothpaste for children

Children should be supervised while they brush up to around the ages of six to eight. For children from two to six, parents should apply a smear layer on the toothbrush, and a pea-sized amount can be used for older children.

Many children's toothpaste now has the same composition as regular adult toothpaste, the main difference being flavor and packaging. The flavoring may tempt children to ingest or eat the toothpaste, which is why adult supervision is important.

Children should make sure not to swallow fluoride when brushing their teeth so you may want to consider an option with less fluoride, or just make sure to use a small, pea-sized amount.

There are different options of toothpaste depending on the age of your child and we've got separate guides that cover the best kids' toothpaste as well as the best kids' toothbrushes for them too.
____________________________

There are so many toothpaste brands available, choosing the right one to meet your needs can be tough. The best option for you and your family is going to depend on lots of factors: gum sensitivity, plaque & stain removal, bad breath, dry mouth, cavity protection, etc...

Remember that no matter how great your toothpaste is, and how much thought you put into what ingredients you want and don't want, the most important thing is to brush TWICE A DAY with a suitable toothbrush and clean between your teeth daily.

Additionally, whatever toothpaste you choose, make sure to check the ingredients carefully if you have certain food allergies

Why You Should Act Now
Most dental insurance plans have annual caps that limit your benefits. Once you reach your cap, you are responsible for more out-of-pocket costs. On the other hand, if you haven’t used all your dental insurance benefits for the year, the clock is ticking. Since you can’t carry over your remaining benefits from year to year, you will lose them on January 1. By strategically scheduling treatments before your benefits expire, however, you can fully leverage your insurance coverage to keep your out-of-pocket costs as low as possible.

What You Can Do
Even if your dental health seems fine, you can still cash in on your remaining dental benefits for the calendar year by scheduling a cleaning and exam. While you’re getting an exam, you can ask your dentist if you could benefit from any necessary treatments covered by your insurance.

If you have been putting off a restorative treatment, such as a filling or crown, now is the time to make an appointment. You can also talk to your local pediatric dentist to see if your child can benefit from any recommended treatments covered by your insurance plan.

Again, since your benefits will reset on January 1, it’s important to look at every possible way to save on dental treatments. The last thing you want is to end up with a nagging pain in your mouth the first week of January. By getting a check-up now, your dentist can catch potential problems and repair them before your benefits reset at the start of the calendar year.

Another Smart Way to Save
In certain instances, you may be able to maximize your coverage by splitting up restorative treatments, which often come with higher out-of-pocket costs. If a treatment requires more than one appointment, you may be able to pay for it using your dental benefits from two separate calendar years. Simply schedule the first part of the treatment in December and the second part in January.

Before attempting this, however, you need to talk to your dentist to make sure it won’t put you at risk for complications. You also need to make sure your dentist accepts your dental plan and will have enough availability to schedule each of your appointments within one or two weeks. Although this may not be possible with every treatment; if your dentist approves, you could significantly lower your out-of-pocket costs.

Things to Consider
To fully maximize your dental coverage, you need to make sure you understand your dental plan. You should also call your provider to determine how close you are to your yearly cap. If you still have coverage available, you should take advantage. Since coverage can vary based on whether a treatment is preventative, restorative or elective, ask questions to better understand your available benefits. You can then talk to your dentist and come up with the best possible plan for your unique needs.

Bad breath, also called halitosis, can be embarrassing and in some cases may even cause anxiety. It's no wonder that store shelves are overflowing with gum, mints, mouthwashes and other products designed to fight bad breath. But many of these products are only temporary measures because they don't address the cause of the problem.
Certain foods, health conditions and habits are among the causes of bad breath. In many cases, you can improve bad breath with consistent proper dental hygiene. If simple self-care techniques don't solve the problem, see your dentist.
Bad breath odors vary, depending on the source or the underlying cause. Some people worry too much about their breath even though they have little or no mouth odor, while others have bad breath and don't know it. Because it's difficult to assess how your own breath smells, ask a close friend or relative to confirm your bad-breath questions.
If you have bad breath, review your oral hygiene habits. Try making lifestyle changes, such as brushing your teeth and tongue after eating, using dental floss, and drinking plenty of water.
If your bad breath persists after making such changes, call our office to schedule your dental cleaning.
