The news broke about an hour ago and I’m gutted, like so many others in public health, science, and medicine. Apologies in advance for some fuzzy thoughts and initial reactions. It feels like trying to give flight coordinates mid-tailspin.

The CDC website has been updated with blatant falsehoods about vaccines and autism. It pains me to share this image— but the “cross out” helped a smidge. The public needs to know what’s happening.

We knew this was coming but as my dear friend said, it’s very different to see it in black and white. It’s really real now.

I immediately climbed into bed with my kids when I saw it. I needed to be close to them and brought back down to reality because none of this feels real.

Like many of you, I have questions. What does this mean? What are the implications? Two weeks ahead of the ACIP meeting, many of us are spiraling.

But let’s all be clear about what this is: a game of political chess. And right now, they’ve cornered the queen.

To anyone confused about vaccines and autism in light of this: There is no new information here. We have studied this exhaustively for decades. Zero causal data exists linking vaccines to autism.

Scientists are parents too. If we saw safety signals, we would be the first to share them. Full stop.

This feels existential. Like a death. A loss. Our federal public health infrastructure has been compromised.

They’re wielding autism like a sword in their battle against vaccines—treating autistic people as collateral damage rather than valued members of our communities who deserve better than being used as political pawns.

What comes next? I don’t know. But I’m thinking through the implications, and they’re not good…

What happens to the Vaccine Injury Compensation Program? Could parents sue if their child happens to receive an autism diagnosis after vaccination? Will vaccine manufacturers continue producing vaccines with such elevated liability exposure?

This is all by design.

They’ve cornered our queen, but this isn’t checkmate yet.

“Parents should seek immediate medical care for child who has consumed a recall formula develop any of the following symptoms: poor feeding, loss of head control, difficulty swallowing, or decreased facial expressions.”

The cases were identified in Arizona, California, Illinois, Minnesota, New Jersey, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas and Washington and involved infants ages 16-157 days.

ByHeart recalled two lots of its formula with use-by dates of Dec. 1, 2026:

Florida has just put a target on every child in this country. If you don’t think these childhood diseases exist, go visit Africa, South Asia, Malaysia, Indonesia even Europe and Central Asia. The petty politicians of Florida are endangered all Americans. Forrest Gump said it best “Stupid is what Stupid does.”

As a pediatrician in Florida, I’m alarmed and outraged by today’s announcement:

Florida plans to eliminate all childhood vaccine mandates, including those for measles, polio, chickenpox, hepatitis B, and more, becoming the first U.S. state to fully reject school immunization requirements.

The state’s Surgeon General, Dr. Joseph Ladapo, even likened these mandates to “slavery” and labeled them “immoral intrusions” on parental and bodily autonomy.

This isn’t just reckless, it’s downright dangerous.

National and Florida-specific data show:

- For the 2024–25 school year, about 5.1% of Florida kindergartners , roughly 11,287 children, were already exempted from one or more vaccines. That’s second only to Texas in total number.

- Immunization rates among U.S. kindergartners have slipped well below the 95% threshold critical for herd immunity, while measles cases have reached levels not seen since before its eradication in 2000.

- The CDC estimates that childhood vaccines have prevented over a million deaths and saved trillions of dollars in medical costs since the mid-1990s.

Worst-case scenario?

Our children could suffer the return of devastating, vaccine-preventable diseases: measles, polio, whooping cough, rubella, a resurgence that could lead to illnesses, hospitalizations, long-term complications, and even deaths.

This rollback could cascade:

1. Outbreaks in schools would quickly spread to homes—impacting infants, immunocompromised people, and elderly family members.

2. Florida’s status as a major travel and tourist hub means these diseases won’t stay within state lines.

3. We could see a multi‐generational health catastrophe, undoing decades of public health progress.

Let’s be clear: As pediatricians in this state, and especially here on my page, we will not stay quiet.

We will keep fighting for science-based care and evidence-driven policy.
