A Meaty Debate: Can Meat Be Included in a Healthy Diet?

The meat discussion is nuanced and contentious. For years, nutrition experts have conveyed contradictory messages. The discussions are not only about the direct health impacts of meat, but also about its environmental effects..

There are reasons to eat and avoid meat, but few people agree on what meat does to our bodies or how it affects the environment. Some people believe that meat is an excellent source of nutrients, while others believe that it is damaging to human health

For every claim that meat may treat a chronic ailment, there appears to be another that claims meat causes heart disease and cancer

Some sources claim that meat is good for the environment, while others claim that meat production adds to deforestation.

Choosing Healthy Protein

When it comes to protein consumption, quality is just as essential as quantity. Here's everything you need to know to maintain your body and mind in good shape.

What exactly is protein?
Protein in your diet gives you energy while also supporting your mood and cognitive performance. It is a necessary nutrient for the formation, maintenance, and repair of tissues, cells, and organs throughout the body. While it is present in many of the foods we consume on a daily basis, it is frequently misconstrued as a component of our diets.

Protein is broken down into the 20 amino acids that are the body's basic building blocks for development and energy when you ingest it. Tryptophan regulates mood through generating serotonin, which helps alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety while also improving overall cognitive function.

Most animal sources of protein, such as meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and dairy, deliver all the amino acids your body needs, while plant-based protein sources such as grains, beans, vegetables, and nuts often lack one or more of the essential amino acids. However, that doesn’t mean you have to eat animal products to get the right amino acids. By eating a variety of plant-based sources of protein each day you can ensure your body gets all the essential amino acids it needs.

What Are Proteins, and What Do They Do in the Body?

Proteins are composed of several building units known as amino acids. Our bodies require dietary protein to supply amino acids for cell and tissue growth and maintenance. Our protein requirements alter throughout our lives. Adults should take at least 0.83 g of protein per kilogram body weight per day (e.g., 58 g/day for a 70 kg adult). Plant and animal proteins differ in quality and digestibility, however this is usually not a concern for most people provided their overall protein intake fulfills their requirements. We should strive to take protein from a variety of sources that are good for both our health and the environment.
Proteins are made up of a variety of amino acids that are linked together. These amino acid building blocks are found in plants and animals in a variety of forms. A typical protein has 300 or more amino acids, with the amount and sequence of amino acids being unique to each protein. The amino acid 'letters', like the alphabet, can be organized in millions of different ways to form 'words' and an entire protein 'language.' The resulting protein will fold into a specific shape depending on the number and sequence of amino acids. This shape is critical because it determines how the protein functions (e.g. muscle or enzyme). Every species, including humans, has distinctive proteins.
