This might look like a kiddo just messing with a lock on the wall, but there is a lot going on behind the scenes.

When kids slide, turn, and fasten locks, they are:
-Building finger strength and control for tiny, precise movements
-Practicing bilateral coordination (one hand holds steady while the other slides)
-Exploring problem‑solving and cause‑and‑effect (“What happens if I move it this way?”)

We love using everyday motions(turning k***s, sliding locks, opening latches) to support skills kids need for dressing, opening containers, and safely exploring their world. The best part is they learn all this through play!

Did you know these little suction toys (Squigz) are an OT favorite? Kids always look forward to playing with these when working on skill building!

We love this setup because while kids are busy sticking and popping them on the mirror, they’re actually working on:
-Shoulder and arm strength to support writing, dressing, and play
-Using both hands together (bilateral coordination) to push, pull, and stabilize
-Visual attention and visual scanning as they decide where to place the next piece

The mirror adds its own magic. Kids get to see their bodies in action, watch themselves reach and move, and notice their own facial expressions and success in real time. What looks like simple play is actually powerful skill‑building designed by an occupational therapist.

Meet Kristin, another incredible member of the EJ Therapy OT team! 👋💙
Kristin is an AMAZING OT!

OT Month has given us the best excuse to show off the people who make this clinic what it is. We hope you've loved getting to know the team as much as we love sharing them.

One of our favorite regulation strategies? Movement. 🏃

For many kids, swinging is more than just fun(and it IS super fun), it’s a way to help their bodies feel more organized and calm.

Depending on the child, swinging can:
-Provide soothing, rhythmic input that helps them settle
-Wake up a sleepy system so it’s easier to focus
-Build core strength and balance while they play

If your child seems overwhelmed, “bouncy,” or checked out, a few minutes of safe, supervised swinging or movement(like jumping on a mini trampoline) before seated tasks can sometimes make it easier to sit, listen, and participate.

Every nervous system is different, so notice how your child responds. Adjust the speed, direction, and time on the swing to match what helps them most.

When people hear “sensory issues,” they often picture just one kind of child. But sensory differences can look really different from child to child.

Some kids are sensory seekers, meaning they seem to crave more movement, more touch, more noise, or more input to feel organized and regulated. Others are sensory avoiders where certain sounds, textures, lights, or busy environments can feel genuinely overwhelming.

And many kids are actually both. A child might love crashing into pillows or tight hugs, but struggle with loud rooms, messy hands, or certain clothing textures.
When we understand sensory patterns a little better, it gets easier to respond with support instead of guessing what’s going on in the moment.

Do you see more sensory seeking, sensory avoiding, or a mix of both in your child?

Have you ever wondered why some days your child seems to need more of everything (more movement, more noise, more rough-and-tumble play) and other days they fall apart over a tag in a shirt or a loud room?

That is sensory processing.🧠
It’s how your child’s brain takes in information from the world (touch, sound, movement, body awareness) and decides what to do with it in the moment. Some kids need more input to feel regulated…others need less. It can absolutely change day to day.

In OT, we look for patterns in what overwhelms your child and what helps them feel safer and more organized. From there, we turn those observations into simple, sensory-smart ideas you can use in real life, like at home, at school, and during everyday routines.

You’re not doing anything wrong, and your child is not “too much” or “too sensitive.” Their nervous system is just sending messages in its own way, and understanding those messages can make life feel a little more peaceful for everyone.
What part of this feels most familiar: a child who craves more input, one who gets overwhelmed quickly, or a mix of both?

What does OT have to do with school readiness?
School readiness is SO much more than knowing your ABCs. 📚

To sit in circle time, walk in line, and move around the classroom, kids also need:
-Balance to stay steady on their feet and in their chair.
-Core strength to sit upright without tiring out
-Body awareness so they know where their body is in space
-Coordination to step on/off curbs, navigate playgrounds, and carry a backpack

In OT, we use playful balance activities (like these balance dots) to help build those foundational skills that make school routines feel easier and safer.

Good news: you don’t need a fancy therapy room or toys to work on fine motor skills at home. 🏠

If you’re wondering what’s going on with the exercise ball in the picture, fine motor skills start with strong shoulders and core. Activities like this help build that foundation.

Some of the most powerful activities use things you probably already have:
-Kitchen tongs to pick up pom-poms, cotton balls, or snacks
-Playdough for rolling, squeezing, and pinching
-Stickers (peeling them builds great fingertip control!)
Bonus: clothespins for pinching and hand strength!

Keep it short and playful. Even a few minutes a day can make a difference over time. 💪
Have a kiddo who loves one of these? Tell us their favorite in the comments so other parents can get ideas too.
