The Village Network Creating Partnerships for a Brighter Future

03/16/2026

If you’ve ever wondered how ordinary people can make an extraordinary impact in a child’s life, this conversation will stick with you.

On this episode of the Best of Wooster Podcast, I sat down with Cathy Ballinger Brown, Foster Care Program Marketer with The Village Network, to talk about the real need for foster families and what advocacy for children looks like behind the scenes.

Cathy shares how her passion for working with kids and teens grew into meaningful work that now stretches across Ohio. From community events and churches to libraries and local festivals, she spends her time helping people better understand the foster care system and showing them how they can step in and make a difference.

In this episode, we talk about what most people do not realize about foster care, why the need for foster homes is so urgent, how this work became more than a job for Cathy, and what someone should do if they have ever considered becoming a foster parent.

This is one of those conversations that reminds you that changing lives does not always start with something big. Sometimes it starts with being willing to care.
Give it a listen, and if you know someone who has ever talked about fostering or supporting kids in need, share this episode with them.

Nearly 1 in 5 children in the U.S. lives with a mental, emotional, or behavioral health condition. That’s not a small number. That’s classrooms. Teams. Neighborhoods. Early, trauma-informed support can make a lifelong difference — especially for children who have experienced instability or foster care. When we talk about mental health openly, we create space for healing. 💚

John Bowlby (1907–1990) was a British psychiatrist and psychoanalyst who developed Attachment Theory, a framework that transformed how we understand the bond between children and caregivers. His research showed that secure, responsive relationships in early childhood are essential for healthy emotional development. Bowlby’s work deeply influenced foster care, adoption practices, trauma-informed care, and modern child welfare policies. His legacy continues to guide mental health professionals in understanding how early relationships shape lifelong well-being.
