The #1 question patients ask about wisdom teeth is: "Do I really need to get them removed?" Wisdom teeth are usually only removed if they cause problems or are likely to cause problems in the future. There are no scientifically proven health benefits of removing wisdom teeth that don't cause problems. However, if you don't have enough room in your mouth for wisdom teeth, or they're painful, infected, or cause other dental problems, they may need to be removed. You may also still need to have them removed, even if they aren't causing any pain. The only way to know for sure is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Manthos at Laurie Manthos, DMD: (508) 752-2100

The biggest dental problems are often the ones you can’t feel.

That’s why many patients are often surprised to learn that they need a bone graft before getting dental implants. If you've been missing a tooth for some time, the bone in your jaw may have started to deteriorate without you even knowing. Even without symptoms, jawbone loss can weaken the foundation needed to support an implant. A bone graft with Dr. Manthos can help restore a strong foundation for your dental implants.

After a wisdom tooth is removed, a blood clot forms in the empty socket to protect the bone and help healing. If that clot becomes dislodged or dissolves too soon, it leaves the bone exposed. This painful condition is called dry socket.

To avoid dry socket, follow the instructions provided by Dr. Manthos, including:
- Don’t smoke, v**e, or use straws while healing.
- Avoid spitting forcefully or rinsing too hard.
- Stick to soft foods for the first few days.

Dry socket is uncommon, and most people heal without issues. If any problems arise in your recovery, don't hesitate to reach out: (508) 752-2100

Each year, about 2.2 million bone-grafting procedures are performed worldwide.

Bone grafting helps rebuild or strengthen the jaw so it can properly support a dental implant. The gold standard is autografting, where a patient’s own bone is used to repair and reconstruct areas of the mouth, face, or skull. A bone graft enhances the stability and longevity of dental implants. If a bone graft is recommended before your dental implant surgery, set up your appointment at Laurie Manthos, DMD: (508) 752-2100
