Congratulations to Kali Mackay, RN, a clinical nurse on West 1 who was recently presented with the DAISY Award!

Kali was nominated by a nursing colleague, who relayed how Kali's care, advocacy and steadfast support and encouragement "made a world of difference" for a young patient who had sustained significant traumatic injuries. "I know working with Kali lit a fire under this patient to work hard and regain back as much function as she could to get home for her daughter." the nominator said.

The patient was transferred to the Medical Center from a rehabilitation facility after developing pneumonia. "Immediately upon being assigned to care for this patient, Kali was connected and fully invested in providing the type of care she needed," the nominator said. For example, the patient was not sure if she could feed herself, as she had just recently been cleared to eat solid food. Kali knew she could, developed adaptive eating utensils, and, with Kali's support, the patient fed herself for the first time since sustaining her injuries. The nominator shared that the patient said, "That gave me hope. Kali gave me hope I could get better."

Kali also advocated for physical therapy and occupational therapy during the hospital stay and was in the patient's room for every session, lending constant encouragement and support and leading to the patient's ability to transfer herself from the bed to a chair independently. This progress while in the hospital led to the patient qualifying for more extensive rehabilitation services post-discharge.

The nominator also relayed speaking to the patient and her father, and shared that the patient was brought to tears when asked about Kali, saying, "I love Kali. She is the best nurse. I asked her when I met her, 'Do you think I will always be like this?' and she told me, 'No. You want to get better, so you will.' That was the first time I believed it.”

The DAISY Foundation rewards and celebrates the extraordinary clinical skill and compassionate care our nurses provide every day. Nominate a nurse today: https://bit.ly/489ByUQ

This Heart Month and Valentine’s Day, Denise Goulet is celebrating both love and life. The Worcester resident feels especially grateful to be alive to mark two milestones this year: her 50th wedding anniversary and her 70th birthday.

In late September, just days before a planned vacation, Denise suffered a sudden, life-threatening STEMI heart attack. “I was packed to go away with my girlfriends two days later. If I had been on that plane, we wouldn’t be having this conversation. I’m incredibly grateful to be here,” says Denise.

Doctors at UMass Memorial Medical Center, including cardiologist Dr. Matthew Lawlor, provided emergency care that saved Denise’s life. Unbeknownst to them all, her husband, Tom Goulet, was also becoming a patient of Dr. Lawlor.

On the very day Denise was discharged from the hospital, Tom, age 75, was meeting with Dr. Lawlor to discuss his own serious heart condition, advanced aortic valve disease.

“Just days after I treated Denise for her life-threatening heart attack, her husband, Tom, came in to see me for evaluation of a serious valve condition. During his appointment, his daughter walked in, hugged me, and said, “You saved my mom’s life,” says Dr. Lawlor. “Hearing that in the middle of her father’s appointment was unexpected and really moving.”

Two months later, Tom underwent a successful TAVR procedure, performed by Dr. Lawlor.

Tom says, “Now we look at everything differently. We’re just thankful we’re both here and able to move forward together.”

Meet Ewa Pasiecka-Krupa, a PCT II-SHARE Clinical Support caregiver in our Cardiac Step Down unit.

"I never thought I would be working in health care. I didn’t think I would be the right person with such a responsibility and a good fit to take care of people in such a vulnerable state. When my daughter was born, I had to look for a job that I could work overnight hours due to my husband's work schedule. I ended up applying for HHA position and after starting the job, I fell in love with my clients and the work. Until then, I never knew what I wanted to do 'when I grew up', but after starting the job with the agency I knew exactly what I wanted to be. After a year, I got my CNA license and I proceeded with my career.

My favorite part of my job is being able to take care and be there for people who can't care for themselves. It's my honor and privilege to be able to be there for them.

I will always remember the moment I had a client who couldn't see the TV, but loved to watch the Red Sox. One time, I was sitting with them and the game got loud. They asked me what was going on. I am not a sports person... I don't know anything about sports. My reply was 'I don't know, everyone is running'. We laughed so hard... we probably hadn't laughed that much in years.

I love working for UMass Memorial because I am able to meet different people.

When I'm not working, I can often be seen with my three beautiful kids whom I love dearly."

Thank you for all the care and compassion you bring to our patients, Ewa!
