The UMass MIND Clinical and Research Program at the University of Massachusetts Medical School (UMMS), Department of Psychiatry, aims to elucidate the etiology of each facet of the triple jeopardy (devastating mental illness, medical co-morbidity, and substance use), and possibly shared pathophysiological pathways and mechanisms among these three conditions. The goal of our research is to develop innovative intervention strategies combining pharmacological and psychosocial approaches to treat schizophrenia symptoms, medical co-morbidity and substance use, and ultimately to improve the quality of life in this patient population. The Community Intervention Program (CIP) is an integral part of UMass MIND, whose mission is to improve the lives and wellbeing of individuals living with a serious mental illness via meaningful community engagement. The CIP program features five modules: Healthy Living; Arts & Music; Early Detection & Intervention; Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion; and Community Education & Support.

As the month of October comes to a close, it's important to look back on what this month stood for in our communities. October is National Depression and Mental Health Screening Month and it's an important time to spread awareness about the signs of depression and share resources for those who might need them. Check out some of the resources available on the last slide!

UMass Mind is extremely excited to share one of our latest publications! In this latest study, Dr. Fan and colleagues explore Brexpiprazole, a newly approved antipsychotic medication, as a treatment that can address co-occurring substance use disorder in SMI patients. The findings highlight the promising potential of Brexpiprazole as a big step towards providing more comprehensive care for the SMI community. The full publication is now available online at https://www.psychiatrist.com/jcp/brexpiprazole-co-occurring-schizophrenia-substance-use-disorder-randomized-controlled-trial/!

Dr. Fan, the director of UMass Mind, presented to the NASMHPD organization back in July! During this webinar event, he drew attention to a rising public health concern of methamphetamine-induced psychosis (MIP). There is a striking overlap between MIP and schizophrenia spectrum disorders and at UMass Mind, we are dedicated to acting as advocates for members of the SMI community.

Today is National Su***de Prevention Day, and is a time to pause and become more aware of the warning signs of su***de. As community members, we serve as advocates and allies for those around us who may be experiencing mental health struggles. Take the time to be there for someone this week and to remind them that they're not alone 💚

The month of July was Minority Mental Health Awareness Month. Although we are now in August, it's important to still be aware of the disparities that minority populations face in mental health diagnosis and treatment. At UMass Mind, we are committed to highlighting and drawing attention to these stigmas and disparities to work towards a more equitable future in mental health care!

Earlier in July, members of the UMass Mind team had the opportunity to tour the Genesis Club in Worcester! As a free, community-based facility supporting adults living with serious mental illnesses, the Genesis Club provides an environment where members and staff work side-by-side to create a supportive environment.

We at UMass Mind have been grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with the Genesis Club in the past on a virtual drama therapy program and look forward to continuing to foster this relationship. Many thanks to the clubhouse for hosting us!

A reported 1.6 million Americans use methamphetamines each year. It is an emerging crisis that is associated with many psychiatric symptoms. In a 2022 Psychiatric Times article, Dr. Fan and Dr. Harrington of UMass Chan Medical School and the UMass Mind Program lay out what clinicians should know about methamphetamine-associated psychosis (MAP) and how to better support and treat individuals affected by MAP.
